VFW Stalwart Ken Munro Passes Away After Valiant Struggle Against Cancer

Posted at 11:04 PM on Sunday, July 12, 2009 by Wisconsin VFW News in Obituaries

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of the Favorite Sons of the VFW Department of Wisconsin: Ken Munro.
Ken succumbed to cancer after a long and courageous battle shortly after midnight in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 12th. The day was also to have marked the 40th anniversary of his marriage to his loving wife, Linda, a Past Department Auxiliary President, who s urvives him.
Although his late brother, Bob, had gone on to serve as Wisconsin VFW State Commander, Ken never aspired to that high office, preferring to dedicate himself to the specific activities to which he was drawn, consistently doing those things that he felt strengthened and enhanced the VFW Spirit of Service. He held various offices at the Post, District and State levels. He is a past Seventh District Commander. He also served as Chief of Staff under State Commander Bill Backes. Ken was also a long-time dedicated member of our Wisconsin VFW State Honor Guard.
Perhaps he will be best remembered for his remarkable sixteen year run as Chairman of our annual King Day festivities each July. Already deep in his battle with cancer, Ken chaired his last meeting as King Day Chairman a little over a year ago in the Spring of 2008, turning over the reins to his successor, Dick Morey, of Waupaca. “He was a great guy”, Dick remembered. “He knew it would take all his strength to battle his illness, but he made certain that all the details were covered, and that everyone had full access to his experience in the job.”
Last year’s King Day would turn out to be his last public appearance at the event. He was awarded two commendations that day: one from King and one from the VFW Department of Wisconsin. Both plaques recognized him for his dedicated service to the Veterans at King.
Funeral services for Ken Munro will take place in Wisconsin Rapids at Taylor & Vollert Funeral Home, 2201 Chestnut Street Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin 54494. (See map, below) on Saturday, July 18th. Visitation will be from 10:00am until 2:00pm, followed by services. The Wisconsin State Honor Guard will perform Funeral Honors for their fallen comrade.
Those wishing to send condolences to his widow, Linda, may mail them to: 1742 Dublin Trail, #82, Neenah, WI 54956.
