Military Honors for Cedric "Tanker" Nelson

Posted at 09:58 PM on Friday, April 18, 2008 by Past Commander VFW Post 8337 in Commander Briefings 2008

Sadly, Cedric “Tanker” Nelson lost his battle with cancer this morning a 0200 hours (4-18-08).

Per Tanker’s request, our Post 8337’ salute should be limited to our presence at Shepherd of The Bay Church, a flagged-draped coffin, a flag folding ceremony, and one bugler. If we have good weather, our salute should be held at the Ellison Bay Cemetery on Mink River Road. If bad weather, we should complete the salute at the back of the church or under the car port.

In summary, services for Cedric Nelson will be mostly a private family affair with military services held after the visitation at church involving two flag folders and one bugler. The date is Monday, April 21, 2008, the time 10 to 11 a.m. visitation (closed flag draped coffin) followed by family private service at either the church or at the Ellison Bay Cemetery 1/2 mile east of downtown Ellison Bay on Mink River Road.

I will post a tribute to Cedric "Tanker" Nelson at www.VFWPost8337.com. Go there also for a briefing on military honors for fallen veterans.

John Mahoney Tribute April 14, 2008

Posted at 09:30 PM on Monday, April 14, 2008 by Past Commander VFW Post 8337 in Commander Briefings 2008

TO: Master Sergeant Floyd Spaulding:  It was a sunny but sad day today. A day we all agree came far too soon. John's fellow vets showed up from around the county and across the country. VFW Post 8337, American Legion Post 527, our County Veterans Service Officer, and the US Airforce were all there to honor John for his service to his community and country.

Rosemary demonstrated courage and grace as she accepted our flag, a bible and commemoration medal from the United States Department of Veteran Affairs.

Our last order from John last Thursday was to keep an eye on his family and take good care of our combat troops. With that in mind, we assembled your family and encouraged them to send you the best smiles possilbe on a sad day in Sister Bay.

Along with their smiles we send an order from someone very special. "Keep your head down, your powder dry, and come home safe and soon!"

God Bless --  Keep the Faith!  Rich Woldt VFW Post 8337 Commanding

VFW Post 8337 Salute to John Mahoney

By: Col. Richard S. Davis Jr.  VFW Post 8337 Liberty Grove Wisconsin

John Ellsworth Mahoney  June 16, 1924 – April 9, 2008

On April 9, 2008:  The ranks of world war II heroes is missing another true patriot, town supervisor, and dedicated representative of his fellow man; one who volunteered for any and all duties, no matter how small or time consuming.

Just three months ago John had us all sign petitions for his position as supervisor for the township of Liberty Grove. He was sworn in Tuesday night and on Wednesday night John left us to begin a new life on duty at the gates of heaven. John will be missed very much.

Visitation: Sunday afternoon 4 until 7 p.m. April 13 - St. Rosalia's Church 600 S Bay Shore Dr
Sister Bay Wisconsin 920-854-5264

Visitation also: At St. Rosalia's Monday morning 9 until 10 a.m. Mass at 10 a.m. followed by military veteran's services at the Ellison Bay Cemetery at 11 a.m.

Veterans should assemble at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Saint Rosalia's Catholic Church.  We'll salute our comrade at 9:55, provide military escort to cemetery, and conduct military service at grave side.   If you have questions? Call our Post 8337' cell at: 920-559-7665    Rich Woldt Commanding

Veterans from VFW Post 8337, American Legion Post 527, and DVA should assemble at 9:30 a.m. at St Rosalia's Catholic Church for salute to our comrade before Mass followed by Military salute at the Ellison Bay Cemetery. Dress? Full veteran post' attire.

Locations:  Saint Rosalia's Catholic Church is at the south edge of Sister Bay at the top of the hill. The Ellison Bay Cemetery is 1/2 mile east of downtown Ellison Bay on "Mink River" Road on the right side of the road.   Picture below. Go to www.caspersonfuneralhome.com for details and to send condolences to John's family.

John was one of the first first troops to plant our flag on the beaches of Liberty Grove.

John was proud of his Grandson on the front lines! He made sure...

...their needs were met!

John served his country well and made us all proud to call him comrade, friend, and fellow combat veteran!   Our letter from the front lines says it all...

Grandfather Mahoney and members of the VFW Post 8337,

We’d like to say thank you very much from all the Marines of 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines Communications Platoon. The sheets you sent were great and much appreciated by all. Here in Ramadi life is not so bad; we have multi-room trailer type housing that support six marines per unit, a very good dining hall with climate control to greater or lesser degree in the places where we work and live. The local population has been very cooperative in supporting the mission we’ve been given, which is to establish a proficient and enduring police force and Iraqi Army that can stand on its own and operate after we’re gone. Much of the time, effort and funding that goes into this area is directed towards civil affairs projects, which as we’ve learned, people who have a place to live, place to work and the basic services of food, water, power and sanitation are much more likely to take pride in their communities and are much less likely to succumb to the highest bidder with plans to disrupt the government and peace in general.

Things have been fairly quiet here without a lot of terrorist type activity. Much of what is broadcasted on the news is spun with one political agenda or another and often doesn’t tell the real success stories of the war. I will tell you that although the job is not finished here yet, Ramadi is one of the true success stories. There are several local businesses opening pubic events to include parades, foot races and other celebrations as well as people going about their day to day lives without fear of attack. We never let our guard down, but can truly see that change is occurring, hopefully with a lasting effect.

We appreciate your support and support from everyone back home – it helps to keep the Marines’ spirit up and remind them of what they’ll be going back to. We send a big salute to all of you and thank you again for supporting us overseas and for protecting our military interests both at home and abroad.

Semper Fidelis,

Master Sergeant Floyd Spaulding and the Marines of 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines Communications Platoon

So how do we say that final Good-bye to John?  Let's do it with a salute from members he's left behind and a welcome home from members he's joined some where up there is the wild blue yonder!

We salute you John!

Your fellow founding fathers of VFW Post 8337

 John Ellsworth Mahoney  June 16, 1924 – April 9, 2008

John was born in Madison Wisconsin to John and Mary Mahoney on June 16, 1924.

John married Rosemary Fernhout at Saint Sebastian’s in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 18, 1949.

He is survived by Rosemary; son John E. (Kathie) Mahoney III, Brookfield, WI; daughter-in-law Nadine Mahoney, Dallas; daughters Mary Foerster, Woodstock, IL and Patty (David) Carter, Brookfield, WI; brother-in-law Jack (Eunice) Fernhout.

John was the proud grandfather of seven; Monica (Floyd) Spaulding; Megan (Jon) Bahr; Tom (Cecile) Mahoney; Mike and Patrick Foerster; Catie and Maggie Carter.

John was a veteran of World War II in the European Theater serving in the Army Air Corp as navigator on a B24 Liberator.

He was a world traveler, avid boater and captain of a tour boat when he retired. John loved serving others and enjoyed serving as a County Supervisor for the town of Liberty Grove. John was involved in his community to include the VFW Post 8337, the Ellison Bay Service Club, the Coast Guard Auxiliary as well as many service organizations in Door and Milwaukee County. Message from the Commander - Salute to George Erickson

Posted at 08:50 PM on Sunday, February 24, 2008 by Past Commander VFW Post 8337 in Commander Briefings 2008

VFW Post 8337 salutes Purple Heart recipient George Erickson for his continued service to Door County veterans and his years of mentoring student at Gibraltar High School.

George once again will mentor Gibraltar students as he serves as our 2008 Post' liaison with Gibraltar faculty and director of our 2008 Voice of Democracy and Patroit Pens essay contests.

Edward the VI, Prince of Whales said when he abrocated the British throne, "I can not serve without the women I love." George comes from a similar cut of cloth. He gives much credit for his success to his lovely wife Annett. Annett too shares a family history of guiding, directing and mentoring Gibraltar students. We salute Annett Erickson for her continued mentoring of our students, dedication to our community, and service to our country.

Report from VFW Mid-Winter Conference - Green Bay, Wisconsin

The Webcom representatives at our VFW Winter Conference demonstrated a number of ways we can use the web site to generate income, navigate national news, listen to music of our choice while at our site, and how to promote events and lead VFW eligible vet to our post.  To benefit most from all VFW sites we should download the VFW tool bar and learn to use it's navigation and searching features.  Following are a few of our comrades attending web training held during the conference. At our March meeting we'll discuss these exciting new internet benefits under "The Good of the Order."

  • We received an update on "The Wall That Heals" project from VFW Historian Steve Conto and learned how to contribute a photograph of someone whose name is inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
  • To search the Virtual Wall log onto the Vietnam Veterans Memorial fund website at www.vvmf.org and choose "The Virtual Wall." Type in the name of the soldier to see what information has already been submitted. Email your scanned image to the Medford Area Middle School.
  • If you have a scanner at home, you can email it as an attachment (jpg, jpeg or gif preferred) to kellebr@medford.12.wi.us with the subject "Put a Face with a Name." Be sure to include the veteran's name, rank, branch of service, branch of military served, dates of service, date of birth, date of death, your name, and any other information you would like included in the remembrance.
  • Mail a copy of your photograph to Wisconsin: "Put a Face With a Name" c/o Bryce Kelley, Medford Area Middle School, 509 E. Clark Street, Medford, WI 5441

And we received an update on The High Ground Veterans Memorial Park from their representative.  Go to www.thehighground.org for a tour of the site and update on this project.

I also worked with Karen Hoffmann owner of "Heros" at www.4heros.com to learn ways we might market VFW pins and memorial coins to raise funds for post' projects.

After only 10 minutes she convinced me to purchase over $3000 in pins. Just kidding!

Saturday night I attended the banquet dinner and was back home in Door County before 0500 hours Sunday morning! The banquet dinner was very good. I met a lot of good friends and fellow veterans.  Here are just a few! They all sent their best wises to our post.

 And a few more...

All in all?

It was a great learning experience and wonderful time to bond with our fellow vets. Post 8337 salutes all the organizers for their hard work and efforts to make our Mid Winter Conference a success!

Over & Out!
