*****

The Arthur Gensler Post 664 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States was mustered in on March 25, 1921 at Clintonville, Wisconsin.

During WW1 Private Arthur R. Gensler S.N. 2056007, was a member of Company 0, 26th Infantry, 1st Division at the time of his death in France after being wounded in action.

On October 4, 1917, Arthur R. Gensler left for training in the U. S. Army at Camp Grant, Rockford, ILL where he became a member of Machine Gun Company; 341st. Infantry. After training, he was transferred to New York, N.Y., then shipped to France, arriving there May 13, 1918. Here he became a member of Company 0, 26th Infantry, 1st. Division and went into action against the German Army.

On October 10, 1918, after being wounded in action, Arthur was admitted to Base Hospital 31, A.P 0 732, Centrexiville, France. Arthur had suffered numerous bullet wounds and a very serious wound to his right leg, which made it necessary to amputate that leg. According to letters from the American Red Cross to Arthur's parents, Fred and Amelia Gensler, Arthur never complained and was a brave, cheerful patient. However as his condition grew worse and he gradually grew weaker, he asked the nurse to write home for him and to convey his love. Arthur died at 7:07 PM on October 24, 1918. At sunset on October 25, 1918, Arthur was buried, facing west, in the American Cemetery on a green hillside overlooking the little town of Centrexiville, France. Chaplain Press conducted graveside service with full Military Honors.

On Thursday evening June 1:6, 1921, Arthur R. Gensler§ body arrived in Clintonville, Wisconsin at 11:15 PM, coming from Hoboken, N.J., where it had previously arrived from France. A squad of ex-servicemen ushered the body to the Heuer funeral parlor where it remained until Friday morning, when it was taken to the ARMORY under guard of ex-service men, VFW and American Legion. Here it laid in state until Sunday afternoon when a large group of ex-service men, relatives and friends gathered at the ARMORY to form a funeral procession to the Christus Lutheran Church where services were conducted by the Rev. E.C.F. Stubenvoll. Following this, a large funeral procession headed by the Clintonville Band/playing a solemn funeral march walked to the Graceland Cemetery. Here after Rev, E.C.F. Stubenvoll conducted a brief grave side service, the ex-servicemen VFW and American Legion conducted full Military Service and Honor, concluding with the firing of a salute as colors were dipped over the grave, followed by the sounding of TAPS"

Arthur R. Gensler died at 22 years of age. He was born April 13, 1896, Town of Bear Creek, Wisconsin. He attended parochial school at Christus Lutheran Church School, Clintonville, Wisconsin. He spent his short life living and working on the Fred Gensler farm located on Elmdale Rd., Town of Bear Creek.

Arthur was survived by his parents, Fred and Amelia Gensler; two brothers, Emil and Erwin; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Wheeler and Lydia.
