Sending Them Off in Fine Style...

Posted at 12:44 PM on Monday, March 2, 2009 by VFW Post 2778 in Local Post News

The seventy-five soldiers of HQ & HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, 32nd Brigade Combat Team, (WI-NG) gathered together with their families to say their final farewells before the troops deployed overseas.

The families started gathering in the morning of Thursday, February 19th, in the hall of Monarch Gardens in the Fox Valley.
The soldiers marched from the armory to the hall and marched in two by two to the applause of more than 350 family members.
A short ceremony was conducted by the Commander of the VFW 8th District, Louis Van Eperen. A fine
rendition of the nation anthem was sung by Jeanne Lietzan from the White Heron Chorale. Each soldier was called by name and presented a rose, a Wisconsin National Guard bag of items and a rifle bore cleaner called a bore snake which was provided by a donation from VFW Post 2778 of Appleton. The band from Appleton West High School played for the ceremony and the Honorable Outagamie Executive Toby Paltzer and the Honorable Mayor of Appleton Tim Hanna gave a short thank you to the troops.
A light meal of brats and hamburgers followed while the children engaged in activities for them. The children had their faces painted, a pirate made animal balloons and each child was provide with a backpack with school supplies and play items in it and a soft, lap blanket all to be followed by a Daddy Doll which will hold a photo of the soldier.
The VFW provided the core of the organizing force behind this farewell ceremony by binding ten local VFW Posts with their Ladies Auxiliaries together from VFW Districts 6, 7 and 8. This group was joined by many other local military support organizations in Fox Valley. The cooperation between the Fox Valley groups made this gathering a success which would have been beyond the resources of any one group. This coalition of groups then spread across the city to gather donations and talent to support the farewell gathering.
All too soon the gathering turned into a departure. The band from Fox Valley Lutheran High School played for the group. The men were called into formation, a few thank you statements were said the troops marched out two by two and were given an honorary police escort to send them on their wa
y.
We hope and pray to see them all return safely in a year.

Appleton Post Distributes "Bore Snakes" to Deploying Troops

Posted at 12:12 PM on Monday, March 2, 2009 by VFW Post 2778 in Local Post News

A Farewell Gathering and Departure ceremony was held for the HHC, 2nd Bn, 127th Infantry (WING) at Monarch Gardens in Grand Chute on Thursday, February 19th. Rifle cleaning bore snakes were presented to each of the seventy-five soldiers departing for Iraq during the ceremony.

One young soldier carries off his "bore snake". The device aids in keeping weapons clean and operating.

These bore snakes improve on the rifle cleaning kit issued with each weapon. The bore snake device is a cleaning ribbon with embedded bronze brushes attached to a weighted cord. The cord is dropped through the bore and pulled. The brushes loosen the fowling and the ribbon cleans it as it is pulled through. The ribbon is the equivalent of 160 cleaning patches.  The device is washable.
This device receives rave ratings from those that have used it.  Many of the VFW members wished they had such an item when they were at war.
Several incidental conversations during the past month revealed that some units had not been issued this device. The local VFW units in Appleton was engrossed in gathering support from the Fox Valley community for the departure ceremony when we discovered that our own infantry unit did not have any.
This discovery took place four hours before the monthly scheduled post meeting for VFW Harvey Pierre Post 2778 in Appleton and ten days before the unit was to depart. A quick phone call was made to the manager of our local Gander Mountain sports store. Ms. Mary Beth Murphy gave an ‘at cost’ price plus a mere tad for the store and proceeded to start the search for the bore snakes. A few hours later the VFW members immediately voted approval for the funds to buy the devices. The bore snakes arrived the day before the troops departed and were issued at the ceremony.
