FRAUD ALERT: Phony E-mail Message Seeks Travel Assistance
Posted at 12:01 PM on Friday, March 12, 2010 by VFW Post 2778
The e-mail reproduced below is a SCAM. You could receive one like it appearing to be from someone you know.
DO NOT RESPOND to this type of message. It is a complete fraud and has been used in numerous instances. The example below was received by VFW members in Connecticut. The person in the "From" line is a legitimate member, but his e-mail address was hijacked and the fake message sent out to numerous individuals, usually from his own mailing list.
If you receive one appearing to be from someone you know, alert that person to this fraudulent use of his/her email address.

Subject: VERY URGENT
Hello,
Sorry I didn't inform you about my traveling to UK for a Seminar, am presently in London. I am stranded here because i misplaced my wallet and other valuable things, personal items such as cash, credit cards and identification document on my way to the hotel. I will like you to assist me urgently with the sum of $2,500 Us Dollars to sort-out my hotel bills and get myself back home. I will appreciate whatever you can afford; I’ll pay you back as soon as I return.
I had no option than to send you an e-mail since I have exceeded my spending limit in the hotel and I have no money to call you. It will cost me 80 pounds to make/receive phone calls and I don't have such money right now. I can only contact you through my e-mail for now. It's impossible for me to access my bank account from here, which is why I need your help. The safest and fastest way for you to help me out is by sending the money through the Western Union . Posted at 03:27 PM on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 by VFW Post 2778
Washington D.C.,March 9, 2010 — In his opening statement today before a joint hearing of the Senate and House Veterans Affairs Committees, Thomas J. Tradewell Sr., the national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S., testified about his organization's concern with the national health care debate, and whether or not it will impact the health care programs currently provided to veterans and military retirees by the VA and the military's Tricare system."Many promises have been made — by the president and by this Congress — that VA and Tricare will be protected, but a free press and an even freer Internet continue to fuel speculation that both health systems will be lost and/or absorbed into a larger national plan," said Tradewell, who leads the nation's largest and oldest major combat veterans' organization. "America's veterans and military retirees look to you — our champions in Congress — to protect both programs, and to do so vocally at every opportunity."
