9th District Mid-Winter Conference Well Attended

Posted at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2008 by District 9 Web Admin

Over 70 District 9 VFW members attended the district's mid-winter conference hosted by Altoona VFW Post 10405.  Many thanks go out to Post 10405 Commander David Winkler and QM Allen Olkives, who together with other post members and volunteers put on a great meeting.

Attendance at district meetings has been increasing in the last several years.  District Commander John Fredrickson and his staff put together an interesting and informative program for the morning roundtable discussion and afternoon business session.  The first roundtable guest speaker was Cliff Sorenson, Eau Claire County Veterans Service Officer, who spoke about Vietnam Veterans being more aware of diseases associated with exposure to Agent Orange.  He also answered questions regarding state and federal VA benefits.  Chippewa County VSO Mike Haley visited with the Ladies Auxiliary at the same time as the roundtable meeting.

Eau Claire County VSO Cliff Sorenson  makes his point that some veterans don't  realize what VA benefits are available to   assist them.  Each county has a CVSO so use them to help determine your benefits.

The 9th District Mid-Winter Conference held on 23 Feb 08 roundtable discussion was very well attended.  Interesting and informative speakers kept member's attention for about two hours.

CSM Ralph Rosemore of the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Battalion, 128 Infantry, spoke next about the future deployment of 3,400 Army National Guardsmen in 2009.  These soldiers come from 36 Wisconsin Communities.  More specifically, soldiers of the 1-128th hail from many communities within VFW District 9.  Those communities include Abbottsford, Arcadia, Eau Claire, Menomonie, Neillsville, New Richmond, Onalaska, Rice Lake, and River Falls.  His main point was that soldiers over seas have most of their needs taken care of and thus troop support is often most important at the family level.  Often times a soldier's family struggles to buy food or pay necessary utilities or has other issues such as car and home maintenance problems to deal with.  Military Family Support Groups can help support the family when one parent has been activated.  VFW members at the meeting suggested that they be represented at Family Support Group meetings so Posts and Auxiliaries can better learn what assistance might be necessary.  CSM Rosemore is a Life Member of Altoona VFW Post 10405.
