Junior Vice Orientation Draws Leadership to National Home
Eaton Rapids, Mich. – Twenty-six leaders of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary received a comprehensive overview of the VFW National Home for Children during a Junior Vice Orientation on May 11-12.
All Department Junior Vice Commanders and Presidents of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary were invited to participate in the two-day orientation event. Represented Departments were Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Special guest Dixie Hild, National Junior Vice President from Nebraska, also participated in the orientation.
The orientation was the third consecutive gathering of Junior Vice leadership at the National Home campus, establishing a tradition that has become an annual event.
“The National Home appreciates all the Junior Vices for attending this orientation,” said Executive Director Patrice Green. “There’s nothing like being here on campus to firsthand learn about the programs and services the National Home offers!”
Junior Vice leadership traveled on Thursday, May 10 to the historic National Home campus in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. Most participants stayed in the on-campus Margaret A. Armstrong Guest Lodge.
Friday was a beautiful and warm Michigan spring day for the guests to enjoy. Participants toured the National Home’s 70-acre main campus, making stops throughout the tour for informative presentations by National Home staff, residents and alumni. The day began at the Guest Lodge and moved across campus from a Single Parent Family Program home, the Iowa House, to the Ladies Auxiliary Nursery, and then following lunch to the Health and Education building and the Community Center before concluding their tour at the museum.
A full day of touring ended with an all-campus barbecue at the National Home Community Center Cafe. The leaders were able to visit with campus residents and staff, a highlight for many attendees. On Saturday morning, the attendees completed their orientation by visiting several of the houses and meeting with National Home current residents.
“I am so pleased that many of this year’s Department Junior Vice Commanders and Presidents were able to attend this educational orientation,” said National Junior Vice President Hild. “I’m also thrilled that so many of us were able to witness the wonderful things going on at the National Home. What an extraordinary place!”
Since 1925 the VFW National Home for Children has been providing for the children and families of our nation’s veterans, while at the same time serving as a living memorial to our nation’s heroes.
