My VFW WebCOM: The First Week

What a week it's been!

First of all, we'd like to express our appreciation to everyone who has  taken the time to join and contribute to the My VFW WebCOM Community. In just over one week, we've had over 300 members join our social network and upload nearly 400 photos and almost two dozen videos. We thank you.

There is this idea that the VFW is all about drinking and telling war stories. We who work diligently for our veterans know better. The goal of the VFW WebCOM Network has been  to change that perception by providing a vehicle to share what we do with our communities and other potential members and supporters.

The primary purpose of launching the My VFW WebCOM platform was to provide additional tools to assist in putting a "face" on on the great things that the VFW and its supporters do to benefit our Veterans and the Military community. To say the response has been enthusiastic would be understating things a bit.

2. What to do on My VFW WebCOM

One of the great things about an online social network is that there's always something to do. Whether it's reading blog posts or writing your own, looking at photos or sharing your own, watching videos or...well you get the idea.

We realize that for many of you, this may be your first experience with an online “social network”. But don't be afraid. Look at this as merely an extension of your “offline” social network. By being a part of the VFW organization, you are already a part of a broad social network. You make friends at your Post. You exchange information when you pass around pictures, watch a video that a post member recorded at one of your events or read your Post newsletter. My VFW WebCOM makes it possible for you to take all those things and share them with other members from around the country and around the world.

By now you may be saying to yourself, “What's the point? I'm already doing this stuff offline.” That's true. But taking part in the network also serves a greater good. The information you share with the community makes the organization as a whole stronger. We all know that today's military is more technology savvy than ever before. Troops are taking their laptops with them when they head overseas. They are making friends and communicating with their families online. When they come looking at the VFW, what will they find? Will they find nothing? Or will they find a friend in their hometown that is ready to welcome them?

3. Getting more from My VFW WebCOM

The My VFW WebCOM social network offers its members the ability to connect on several different levels and in several different ways. One of the most powerful features of the network is the ability to create Groups. Creating a group allows members with similar interests to come together and contribute to the community. We recommend that each post and department start it's own group. By starting a group, you have a place for your Post members to “land” when they come to the network for the first time.

Handy tip: Create a photo album for your Post group and put a link to it on your group page. That way any of your post or auxiliary members who join can contribute their photos to your Post group as well.

You can also start groups for your other interests as well. Got a favorite sports team? Start a group. Like reading? Start a VFW Readers Club. Like cats? Start a VFW Catlovers group and photo album and share your pictures. Have fun with it. You might make some new friends.

From a members standpoint, were you aware that you can add applications to your page to make it even more personal? The My VFW WebCOM network is built on a platform which is allows 3rd party developers to build and easily incorporate add-ons to personal pages. These add-ons extend the functionality and enjoyment of the network for it's users. For instance, you can add applications which allow you play games like Sudoku, listen to music or create your personal news headlines using RSS feeds. You can even add applications to bring in updates from your Twitter and Facebook accounts. New applications are being added almost daily so check back often to find new ways of extending the usefulness of the network.

We'll have more tips on getting more from the network in future issues of the My VFW WebCOM E-News.

4. Did you know?

  • Did you know that we've added a new “Help” tab in the top navigation which links to a contact form? Use it if you need to get in touch with us regarding a problem you might be having with My VFW WebCOM or if you just need some help setting up your page.

  • Did you know we've added a sidebar widget below the chat box to show who is currently logged into the VFW WebCOM TeamSpeak service?

  • Did you know we are still looking for administrators for the Army, Marines and Coast Guard groups?

5. Help us grow

The key to the success of My VFW WebCOM is continued growth. Don't forget to invite your friends and potential new VFW or Auxiliary members to the site.
