History of this Post: We are a three time All-American Post and three time All-State Post. The W D Hammer Post 2972's name sake was the first G I from Gibsonville who was killed in WW II in the Battle of the Bulge. The post was mustered in in 1942 and was a barracks that was moved from the ORD in Greensboro in 1943. The rumor has it that Charlton Heston slept in this barracks prior to his deployment overseas (no written proof but makes good fold lore). The post in now located in a residential area of Gibsonville called the Boonwood Estates, however, when the post was moved in '43 it was the sole building in the area and was surrounded by trees, it was moved in on an old dirt road and today a eight point deer head still hangs on the wall that was shot from the front porch by the Post Quartermaster Bill Boon. The post in the early 40's was a show place in itself with pine paneling in the main hall and ladies aux meeting room. It also had indoor bathroom with running water!!!!!! The houses in G'ville at that time did not have indoor plumbing for the most part that is!!! The post has been rented out in the past for wedding receptions, class reunions, birthday parties, new year parties and just some good old hell raising. However, it is now used for post functions only and we are now in the early stages of doing some remodeling. Happy memories for anyone who have grown up in the Gibsonville area come from the Post Home of Post 2972.
