Post 5362 Ladies Auxiliary hands out U.S. Flags 14 June 2009

Posted at 08:27 AM on Thursday, June 18, 2009 by post5362 in Post Activities

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Table Rock Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5362 handed out U.S. Flags in recognition of flag day.  The flags, which numbered over 180, were given to customers of the Wal-Mart store located at 1227 Burkemont Ave on 14 June, National Flag Day.

Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

The week of June 14 is designated as "National Flag Week." During National Flag Week, the president issues a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. The flag should also be displayed on all Government buildings. Some organizations hold parades and events in celebration of America's national flag and everything it represents.

Post Holds Flag Retirement Ceremony

Posted at 12:00 PM on Monday, April 6, 2009 by post5362 in Post Activities

Members of the Table Rock Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) alonge with the post’s Ladies Auxillary conducted a U.S. Flag retirement ceremony on March 21, 2009.  The ceremony, which was performed at VFW Post 5362, located at 519 Hopewell Road, officially retired over 600 U.S. Flags which had become unserviceable.  Several Prisoner of War (POW) / Missing in Action (MIA) flags were also officially retired at the same ceremony.

The United States Code stipulates, “When a U.S. flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”  Unserviceable flags can be defined as those that are extremely weathered, ripped, tattered, or stained.

The first flag was cermonially raised, lowered, and properly folded, representating the flags that followed.  Each flag was then cermemonially burned in a dignafied manner.   After burning, the ashes of each flag were then burried as required by federal law.

The Table Rock VFW Post has a Red, White, and Blue collection box located at the front of the post where persons may deposit flags that require retirement.  Retirement ceremonies are normally done on Flag Day and on a bi-annual basis.  Persons requesting information regarding flag retirement, proper display of the flag or inquiring about membership may call the post at (828)-437-0427.
