Iraq, Afghanistan Veterans...will they go to college in large numbers? How did you fare under earlier programs?
Posted at 08:11 AM on Saturday, June 14, 2008 by post2573
With a new GI bill on the horizon there are issues being discussed on college campuses on how to effectively serve this new population. The article linked below is from Inside Higher Education and details issues the schools and some veterans that attended the meeting discussed. Seemed to me that many of the issues the veterans encountered were the same ones I ran into as a student under the Viet Nam GI Bill...doesn't seem like higher education learned from the past but it does seem like some are trying to become more welcoming. UNCW has taken some steps to make vets more welcome as you can see from earlier posts on this blog.
What were your experiences with the Viet Nam GI bill and later programs? Comments are easy to post and share experiences. What do you think colleges should do to get ready for more vets? I can carry your ideas back to UNCW and at least get a hearing for them.
