Don't know about others that read this blog but I saw signs like this when I was on active duty from 1959 to 1966. I really thought this form of discrimination had gone away then I read the Wilmington Star last Saturday...yes the day after Independence Day! To his credit Wilmington Mayor Saffo is attempting to end the discrimination but it still sticks in the craw. Link to the story below:

The linked article appeared in the Atlantic City Press and discusses some of the reasons that recent veterans are not joining the VFW and American Legion. Seems like a shame for them to miss the opportunity to talk with vets that have gone through similar experiences and also know how the veterans administration works. Here is the article link:

This consists of the poem below and some related comments. Seemed appropriate this July 4th weekend. Can't give it attribution since I am not sure where it came from but it probably summarizes all of us:
THE FINAL INSPECTION
The Marine stood and faced God,
This must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Marine,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,

There are changes that were made this year (in January National Defense Authorization Act) covering when the hand salute is appropriate for veterans. This change was opposed by the American Legion I do not know if the VFW established a position however the salute is now your choice!
The VFW web site says the following under flag etiquette:
Salute
All persons present in uniform should render the military salute. Members of the armed forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.
Here is the exact text from H.R. 4986 Section 594 amending Section 9 of Title 4 of the United States Code which relates to the rendering of the military salute. note the emphasis which shows what changed:
SEC. 594. CONDUCT BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES AND VETERANS OUT OF UNIFORM DURING HOISTING, LOWERING, OR PASSING OF UNITED STATES FLAG.
Section 9 of title 4, United States Code, is amended by striking all persons present and all that follows through the end of the section and inserting the following: all persons present in uniform should render the military salute.
Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Citizens of other countries present should stand at attention. All such conduct toward the flag in a moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes.
