1. VFW / VA Members Among Fort Hood Victims: Last week's tragic shooting
at Fort Hood included VFW and VA members. Staff Sgt. Justin M. DeCrow,
32, was killed by Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who allegedly murdered 13
and wounded dozens before being shot and apprehended by two civilian law
enforcement officers. DeCrow was a member of VFW Post 11016 in Songnam,
South Korea. He graduated high school in 1996 in Plymouth, IN, and
leaves behind a wife and daughter at Fort Gordon, GA. Two VA employees
also slain were identified as:
* Dr. Russell G. Seager, Ph.D., a 51-year old Army Reserve captain
who led a mental health team at the VA medical center in Milwaukee.
* Lt. Col. Juanita L. Warman, a 55-year-old Maryland National
Guardsman who was a nurse practitioner at the VA medical center in Perry
Point, MD. She was a former member of VFW Post 8276 in Delmar, MD.
VFW Commander-in-Chief Thomas J. Tradewell Sr. said, "No words can
properly convey our condolences to the wounded and families of those
murdered. The entire military family is grieving right now. I just
want them to know they do not grieve alone. Our hearts and prayers are
with them." Read the VFW press release at

Free for Veteran's Day list supplied by American Legion Post 129
Posted at 11:04 PM on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 by post2573
These notes were developed by Mike Sheehan who writes the newsletter for American Legion Post 129 on Pleasure Island.
I found the following article of potential interest at http://militaryfinancenetwork.com/2007/11/07/free-dinner-at-golden-corral/
Veterans Day is just around the corner, and it is a popular holiday to say thanks to our country’s military members. Many restaurants, stores, and other businesses offer free items and discounts to military members, retirees, and other veterans. Most places require proof of service such as a military or retiree ID card, DD Form 214, VFW or American Legion card, or other proof of service, so be prepared if you are asked for proof of service.
In the spirit of the season we thought we would share a few of this year’s promotions with our readers.
Golden Corral’s Military Appreciation Monday
Golden Corral’s 9th annual Military Appreciation Monday dinner is scheduled for Monday, November 16, 2009, from 5 to 9 pm in all Golden Corral restaurants nationwide (note that it is NOT on the actual Veterans Day). The free dinner meal is open to anyone who served in the US Military and is open to all veterans, retirees, active duty military members, and members of the National Guard or Reserves.
· Free “Thank You” Dinner
· Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Applebee’s Free Meal on Veterans Day
Applebee’s is supporting military veterans again this year by offering military members and veterans a free meal on Veterans Day. Simply show proof of military service, including showing up in uniform, military ID, military service organization ID (American Legion card, etc), a picture of you in uniform, or other proof, and select a free meal from a special menu. For more information, visit the AppleBee’s Veterans Day page.
Other Veteran’s Day Discounts:
Many companies, stores, and restaurants offer Veteran’s Day discounts to Active Duty military members, retirees, and/or veterans. Be sure to ask if you are in doubt! Other offers:
· Lowe’s and Home Depot military discounts. The big box home improvement stores often give military members and veterans a 10% discount on military holidays such as Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, and around the 4th of July. Be sure to ask and bring your ID!

Posted at 07:49 AM on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 by post2573
Inside Higher Education has noted that a new site was created for Veterans. The underlined link will take you to the web page.
The American Council on Education has launched a new Web site, Today's GI Bill, to help veterans learn about the new education benefits available to them, the college selection process, and how to succeed in higher education. The site -- debuting just before Veterans Day -- was created with support from the Lumina Foundation for Education.

Waiting for your new GI Bill education benefits? Don't hold your breath!
Posted at 11:14 PM on Friday, October 16, 2009 by post2573
I excerpted one paragraph from the linked Inside Higher Education article to show how long the wait really could be. Of course, emergency money can be made available by going to one of 57 VA regional offices. In North Carolina we have one, in the Durham area...good for those vets attending Duke but not much help for those in Wilmington which is 170 miles away. Oh well!
First the quote:
The fix, however, may be some time coming. The department’s working goal is to pay out all eligible benefits by the start of the spring semester, which Wilson conceded could “theoretically” mean some veterans will go through the entire fall semester without receiving full benefits. That said, Wilson testified that he had not heard of any colleges kicking veterans out because they haven’t received the benefits to which they are entitled.

VA Extends Agent Orange Benefits to More Veterans
Posted at 05:41 PM on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 by post2573
WASHINGTON (Oct. 13, 2009) - Relying on an independent study by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki decided to establish a service-connection for Vietnam Veterans with three specific illnesses based on the latest evidence of an association with the herbicides referred to Agent Orange. The illnesses affected by the recent decision are B cell leukemias, such as hairy cell leukemia; Parkinson's disease; and ischemic heart disease.
Used in Vietnam to defoliate trees and remove concealment for the enemy, Agent Orange left a legacy of suffering and disability that continues to the present. Between January 1965 and April 1970, an estimated 2.6 million military personnel who served in Vietnam were potentially exposed to sprayed Agent Orange.
In practical terms, Veterans who served in Vietnam during the war and who have a "presumed" illness don't have to prove an association between their illnesses and their military service. This "presumption" simplifies and speeds up the application process for benefits.
The Secretary's decision brings to 15 the number of presumed illnesses recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
"We must do better reviews of illnesses that may be connected to service, and we will," Shinseki added. "Veterans who endure health problems deserve timely decisions based on solid evidence."
