Sports Clips' Donation Providing Troops with Christmas VFW “Free Call Day”

Thursday, December 27, 2007 at 04:14 PM

by Military Initiative Program and UpLink

GEORGETOWN, Texas, Dec. 20, 2007--This Christmas, servicemembers stationed worldwide will be able to call loved ones during a VFW Operation Uplink “Free Call Day,” thanks to an $80,000+ donation from Sport Clips, a nationwide chain of men’s barbershops famous for their sports-themed decor.

VFW Department of Texas leaders graciously accepted the check in early December from Sport Clips CEO Gordon Logan, who also is a member of VFW Post 8587, Georgetown, Texas.

Hundreds of Sport Clips franchises across the county participated in the Veterans Day “The Biggest Haircut Day of the Year” benefit. The company donated a dollar from every haircut to Operation Uplink, the VFW’s free phone card program for deployed servivemembers and hospitalized veterans. Sport Clips also collected community donations.

An Air Force veteran, Logan said he believes strongly in supporting the military, which is why the hair-care franchise for men and boys has been offering yearlong veterans discount services since 2005.

“With more than 500 stores from coast to coast, Sport Clips and our clients had the incredible opportunity to make calling home on December 25 a reality for our servicemen and women,” said Logan. “I know how important it is to hear the voices of loved ones when you are overseas for months at a time. It’s our honor and privilege to make this a holiday gift for those who are selflessly serving our country.”

“Every day, we get postcards from servicemembers telling us how deeply they appreciate calling home for free,” said Michael Penney, director, VFW National Military Services. “This donation is a wonderful gift for military families this holiday season. We can’t thank Sport Clips enough for their generosity.”

OPERATION UPLINK INFORMATION

Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at 10:59 AM

by Military Initiative Program and UpLink

I am the Operation Up-Link chairperson for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of North Carolina. I reside in Spring Lake and my home phone is 910-436-5836. All requests for calling cards for Military who reside in or, are stationed in North Carolina must go through me and I must approve them. There are no exceptions. This way we can keep accountability for them. We try to have the family support group leader request them for the entire Company, Battalion or Brigade, this way we can ship them all at one time. We know and understand at times the units are split up and we will take those under special consideration. All requests must be on an operation up-link request form and fill out as instructed and sent to me at cjhelwar@aol.com   (I have no funds to mail the form or cards). But I can email it to you, Once you have fill it out and E-mailed the form back to me, I will approve or disapprove the form and E-mail it to National. National will ship the cards directly to the Unit and or person that you request them for. Cards come in packs of (50). Each soldier is allotted one (1) card (at a time) but round of your request to the closet Fifty (50). I hope you understand that we must control these cards and we encourage each Post to make a donation to Operation Up-Link and we will continue to support our Military and thank them for what they do in keeping our great country free.
