Pup Tent 24 Provides Coffee, Poppys, and Conversation

Monday, July 7, 2008 at 07:31 AM

by Grand of NC Military Order of the Cootie

The Lafayette Nits, Pup Tent 24. Spent their July 4th Weekend ( 5th and 6th) providing free coffee and conversation as well as information and Poppys to travelers at the I-95 South rest area in Fayetteville.

The distribution of Poppys helped raise money for the Pup Tent’s veterans hospital work in the Fayetteville area. After all, our motto is “Keep ‘em smiling in beds of white”.

Traveling youth were told about the VFW’s Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen Programs.

Seam Squirrel Jim Cacoulidis, Blanket Bum John Shelander, Hide Gimlet Harvey Stewart, CCDB/HC Dick Easingwood, and Tight Wad Joe Dibble were assisted by Ladies Auxiliary President Penny Cacoulidis and Chaplain Lillian Easingwood in this worthwhile project.

Veterans, young and old, stopped by to say hello and to swap stories. VFW District 8 Commander Mark Bergman and his wife, Dist Auxiliary Guard, Carola stopped by to offer support.

New I.R.S. Organizational Income Filing Requirement

Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:24 AM

by Grand of NC Military Order of the Cootie

The U S Internal Revenue Service  (IRS) now requires, under the Pension Protection Act of 2006, that all tax-exempt organizations file income statements each year .

If your Pup Tent earns over $25,000 in gross income during your fiscal year, you must file an IRS Form 990 (which you should already have been doing, anyway!). Keep the same fiscal year you have been using in the past, be it the calendar year, the VFW accounting year (1 July-30 June) or the Department's fiscal year (1 June-31 May).

If your Pup Tent earns $25,000 or less each year, and you have access to the Internet, go to www.epostcard.form990.org/default.asp where you will find instructions on how to login and file your own post Form 990N Electronic Postcard. You may use whatever fiscal year you want, but for simplicity purposes, we suggest 1 July-30 June,  The IRS Internet site will not let you file the Form 990N until after the end of your fiscal year.

If your post earns $25,000 or less each year and you do not have access to the Internet, I can assist with your Form 990N Electronic Postcard for you. There is no paper form that you can file with the IRS.  If you do not file a Form 990 or 990N each year, your Pup Tent WILL lose its tax-exempt status!!

Please contact me at PO Box 48507, Cumberland, NC  28331-8507, or e-mail me at EASICREA@EARTHLINK.NET for assistance.

Pup Tent 24 Hosts Winter Scratch (Click on Pics to Enlarge)

Monday, January 21, 2008 at 06:54 AM

by Grand of NC Military Order of the Cootie

The LaFayette Nits, Pup Tent 24, Fertile Hunting Grounds of Fayetteville, North Carolina, under the leadership of Seam Squirrel Jim Cacoulidis and MOCA President Penny Cacoulidis hosted the 2008 Grand of North Carolina Winter Scratch on January 19th and 20th.

Friday evening saw the convergence of Cooties and Sisters from the Great State of North Carolina at VFW Post 670 for dinners of steak, chicken, or shrimp with baked potatoes, freedom fries, salad, and rolls which was professionally prepared and served by NC Chapter #1, of the Rolling Thunder. After dinner State VFW Commander, John Shelander, provided his expert service as DJ and Karaoke master.

After the MOC and MOCA meetings on Saturday, the MOCA held an initiation in which the MOC “snuck in” Past Grand Commander Larry Flood to see what was going on. He got caught and had to endure the initiation himself.

In the evening, Pup Tent 24 held the “Winter Wonder Land” dinner and dance. PT 24 spared no expense and ordered snow for the evening.  A delicious dinner of sweet and sour meatloaf, roast pork loin, and Teriyaki chicken with all the trimmings was served.

The host Pup Tent called in one of their own expert, Cootie Gordon Craig, to call out the horse races with the assistance of Cdr Shelander. Six not so young jockeys rode the two-year-old thoroughbreds in 4 races.

As a special treat to all who attended, our Grand Chaplain, Stephen Smith, officiated in the renewing of wedding vows to two of our MOC/MOCA couples. Jerome and Gloria Kusy (Jacksonville, NC) as well as Dave and Debby Thompson (High Point, NC) stood before all who were present and exchanged their vows (again).

DJ Gail Strickland from Nashville, TN provided the music for the remainder of the evening. There was even dead and dying bugs in the area.

Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 02:10 PM

by Grand of NC Military Order of the Cootie

Each month, Post 670 and the MOC Pup Tent 24 alternate holding a bingo session at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, NC. An hour of intertainment and food is provided to the patients attending the bingo. Sometimes extra food is sent to the wards for the patients that could not attend. Gifts are given out on special occasions such as Easter, Father's Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Some of the men and ladies travel over 100 miles to the hospital to provide support.

Below is just one session of bingo where Comrade Dan Kelly, a VA Hospital Recreation Assistant and Post 670 member calls the bingo.
