WWII Ground Combat Infantrymen Eligible for Bronze Star Medal

"Infantrymen who served in ground combat during World
War II between December 7, 1941 and September 2, 1945, are eligible to
apply for a Bronze Star Medal (BSM), according to the U.S. Army Human
Resources Command. Approval is virtually guaranteed for those recipients
of the Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB) or the Combat Medic's Badge
(CMB). Army regulations that govern this award may be found in AR
600-8-22, Military Awards.

Next of kin may apply for the posthumous award(s). If the veteran has
previously received a BSM during combat for a specific act of bravery,
he or his next of kin is still eligible to apply for a BSM."

District 8, NC Holds Summer Meeting

District 8, NC, held their summer meeting at VFW Post 6018 in Fayetteville, NC on August 10th 2008. Department  Surgeon, Saundra Clagett and Past State Auxiliary President, Marie Negus were the Department Representatives.

Post 6018 had a delicious dinner of ham, chicken, rice and gravy, mixed vegetables, tossed salad and desert and they fed about 100 guests. Thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary of Post 6018.

After the Department Representatives gave their presentations, the District Commander presented several posts with National awards then the District and the Auxiliary held their meetings.

District 8 Hold Elections

District 8 held their convention at Post 2843 in Pembroke, NC on Sunday, May 18, 2008. Post Sr. Vice Commander Larry Jacobs welcome everyone to his post home and offered a delicious dinner of fried chicken, good southern BBQ, snaps, corn, potato salad, cole slaw, rolls, and assorted desserts.

Department Representatives, Surgeon Saundra Clagett, and Aux Chaplain Janice Butterworth were introduced by District Commander Richard Zavesky and President Ida Workman.

Special guest, Eagle Scout Ian W. Berdeau was awarded the Scout of the Year award from the District by the state representatives.

After the Joint Meeting session, each group held their seperate meetings and elections of officers for the 2008-2009 membership year.

Unpaid Membership List

We now have the 2008/2009 unpaid membership lists.  These lists contain the names and contact information of former members-at-large, Military Initiative Program members, relocated members, and prior unpaid members.  The lists can be used by your post for recruiting purposes.  All of these people were members of this organization at one time.  With an invitation to your post, they may choose to become members again.

     The lists can be emailed to you by contacting Department Membership Chairman Jason Schoolcraft at jschoolcraft@embarqmail.com . Compact discs with the lists are also available upon request.  They are in Microsoft Excel, allowing you to filter the lists by city or zip code.  If you do not have access to a computer and would like a paper copy of the lists call Jason at (910) 642-7105.  He will print the lists for your city and surrounding areas and get them to you.

District 8, NC Conducts School of Instruction

North Carolina District 8 held their 2008-2009 School of Instruction at VFW Post 670 in Fayetteville on August 2nd, 2008. District Commander, Mark Bergman opened the training session with the Commander’s portion then introduced various program chairmen for their presentations.

1.    State Membership Chairman, Jason Schoolcraft spoke on the Department’s Membership plan for 2008-2009

2.    State Community Services Chairman, Richard Zavesky, spoke about Community Activity reporting procedures and the District’s Patriot’s Pen Program.

3.    District Chief of Staff, Jim Clark, spoke on the MAP, Uplink, Unmet Needs, and Adopt-a-Unit programs that have been combined with the National Military Services Program which is headed up at the Department level by District 8’s Commander, Mark Bergman.

4.    District Membership Chairman, Bill Green, also spoke on the District Membership Program.

After the presentations, a question and answer period was conducted.

“All State Team” Status Awarded to District

  District 8 Commander Richard Zavesky and Quartermaster Richard Easingwood receive “All State Team” hats from Past Commander-in-Chief (1996-1997) James E. Nier and State Commander John Shelander. The “All State Team” awards are given to Districts and Posts who achieve or surpass membership and community activity requirements set by the State Commander.
