Constitution Day Celebration
Posted at 09:57 AM on Friday, September 25, 2009 by District 2
The Beaufort County Committee for Constitutional Studies and Post 6088 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsored a celebration of the signing of the U. S. Constitution Saturday at Veteran's Park in

Reverend Clara Albritton, pastor of Your day Deliverance Church of God, invoked God's blessings followed by Mike Isbell, a member of the Beaufort County Board of Education, leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Gorge Schryer, District Commander of the VFW, shared the mission statement of his group. This was followed by the Brotherhood of Harmony singing North Carolina is My Home and God Bless America.

Nana's Family & Friends: Zaria Cobb, Jordan Dixon, Leland Gates, Hannah Groves and Emily Morris, a group of young patriots sang This Land is Your Land.
Jackie Van Essendelft shared with the group an interesting review of the Founding Fathers who were instrumental in drafting the Constitution. Her thesis was that ours is a nation built on a Christian heritage by God Fearing men , giving numerous examples to support this understanding, contrary to what many seem to be trying to deny these days. You can read, and learn a great deal, from her presentation by clicking here.

Ms. Essendelft was followed by Jeff Lewis, National Director of the FIRE coalition reminding the group in closing that the heritage our Founding Fathers left us must still be supported and defended today and that doing so compels all of us who love freedom and liberty to work to defend our Constitution. He suggested that the Constitution and Bill of Rights are analogous to an "Employee's Manuel" where elected officials are the employees and We The People are the employers.

Dist 2 Commander George Schryer reads Article 1 of the VFW Constitution to let the crowd know what the Veterans of Foreign Wars is all about.

Great attendance for our 5th annual celebration.

A great mix of ages and occupations

Local government required we redesign our signs.

Giving thanks for all we have.
Can't wait for those hot dogs.

Over 140 hot dogs were given out topped with ketsup, mustard, onions and Velma Hickmans fantastic chilli.

Dist. Cmdr. George Schryer, Post 6088 Sr. Vice Cmdr. Jr. Amici and Doug Tilton from VFW Post 7032 help to satisfy the cravings.

And they keep on coming.

Saturday Aug. 29th Post 7032 held its recruiting drive at the Winterville Watermelon Festival. The day was hot but lots of people were out and about. Many stopped by the VFW display to discuss eligibility requirements, programs, and some just to chat. Both the Ladies Aux and the Comrades found fertile ground and agreed it was well worth the effort and the heat. The post members were joined by Dept. Jr. Vice Cmdr. Jason Schoolcraft and Dist. 2 Cmdr. George Schryer.

District 2 Summer Meeting
Posted at 08:00 AM on Thursday, August 6, 2009 by District 2
District 2 held their summer meeting on Aug. 2, 2009 in Goldsboro NC. This was a historic meeting for District 2 as Goldsboro VFW Post 2615 has not hosted a district meeting since 1999 when hurricane Floyd destroyed their post. Since then they have struggled with several problems, one of which was a location in which to hold their meetings. Thanks to the generosity of the local American Legion Post Goldsboro Post 2615 now has a home. Post Commander Bill Graham, his comrades and Ladies Aux. welcomed the district members and served an excellent meal of BBQ, Chicken, ColeSlaw and Potato Salad.
Dist. Commander Schryer and Dist President Gilbert welcomed all and introduced Dept. Representatives Bruce Edwards, Dept QM/Adj. and Dept President Lynn Jones. Both Dept. representatives spoke on the renewed efforts to help increase recruiting efforts by joining forces and having each post host at least one recruiting effort at a local community event.
Dept. QM/Adj. Bruce Edwards and Dist. 2 Cmdr. George Schryer share a funny moment.

VFW: New GI Bill Will Change Lives
Posted at 10:32 AM on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 by District 2
WASHINGTON, August 4, 2009 - The national commander of the 2.1 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries called this week's implementation of the new Post-9/11 GI Bill a significant milestone for military servicemembers, their families and the entire country."The original World War II GI Bill opened higher education to the masses and produced U.S. presidents, scientists, scholars, and captains of industry who were directly responsible for America's tremendous era of growth and prosperity in the second half of the 20th century," said Glen M. Gardner Jr., a Vietnam veteran from Round Rock, Texas.
"The new 21st century GI Bill will provide today's warrior with that same access to a first class education, and it's all due to the leadership and determination of Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.)," he said.
"The VFW is proud to have been an early supporter of his landmark legislation through the advocacy work of our Washington Office on Capitol Hill and the grassroots efforts of our members in every congressional district. Education changes lives, which in turn strengthens families and our communities and nation. We are proud to have helped this bill become reality."
