Local World War II Veterans Honored

Posted at 03:07 PM on Thursday, December 3, 2009 by WebMaster Post 7356

By Debra Anderson, VFW Post 7356

On a recent Sunday afternoon at the Parkville VFW Post on Tom Watson Parkway, Loren Clark of Platte County, and Frank Royer of Lake Wakoumis were named Knights of the Legion of Honor by the French government for their service during the Second World War.    Over 150 friends and family members attended the ceremony.

When Loren Clark and Frank Royer were drafted into the Army in 1944 neither one knew what lay ahead.   Both served in battle in France as the Allies fought to defeat the Nazis -- Clark as a field artillery gunner and Royer as an Infantryman.

Presenting the awards was Colonel Jean-Claude Brejot, French Liaison Officer to the Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth.  Reading from the letter from the Consulate General office, Colonel Brejot said,  “Through this award, the French government pays tribute to the soldiers who did so much for France and Western Europe.   More than 60 years ago, you gave your youth to France and the French people.  . . . Gratitude and remembrance are forever in our souls.”

The French National Order of the Legion of Honor was founded in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte to recognize service to the nation.   It has a long history of being awarded to individuals for great deeds, achievements, bravery, and sacrifice.

Since 2004 the French consulates have been recognizing American service members who served during the liberation of France during the Second World War.   Applications are reviewed in France and only those who meet specific criteria are awarded the medal.

Following the ceremony was a reception and a chance for guests to talk with the honorees.    Loren Clark said it was “a marvelous ceremony.   I’m honored to receive this award.”   Frank Royer called it a “once in a lifetime experience.”

To find out more about submitting a veteran for this award, contact Claire March at the Consulate General of France in Chicago at (312) 327-5221.
