The Post and Auxiliary held their annual picnic on Friday, July 4, which is for all members, their families, and friends. Pat and Diana Anderson volunteered to be in charge again this year. They received very able assistance setting up things the day of the picnic from Irvin and Bessie Reynolds; Gene Silvey; and Jim and Carol Probasco.

Pat, who is becoming quite accomplished at the grill, kept plenty of burgers, brats, and hot dogs available.

An estimated 55 people enjoyed plenty of delicious food. We are very fortunate to have so many good cooks in the Post and Aux.

Besides celebrating our Nation’s independence, we were thankful our pavilion was ready in time for the picnic. Also, it was a time to remember comrades who could not be with us, especially Post member Frank Reeves, who passed away the previous night.

After enjoying a good meal, people took the time to visit for a while. A nice ending to a good time.

There were several Independence Day celebrations held in Ava and Douglas County this year and the Post had the honor of participating in two of them. Though bad weather was predicted, it held off and both festivals drew record crowds.
For the second year, the Post’s Honor Guard was asked to post the Colors at the Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare Center’s annual celebration on Friday, June 27. Honor Guard members were (from left) Jerry Garrison, Jim Probasco, Pat Anderson, and Irvin Reynolds. Missy Breshears sang the National Anthem.

For the first time the Honor Guard posted the Colors at the Highway Church of the Nazarene’s annual Celebrate America event on Sunday, June 29. While the church’s praise team sang the National Anthem, Honor Guard members Etta Mecke, Jim Probasco, Pat Anderson, and Irvin Reynolds posted the Colors.

A number of Post members gathered at the building on Tuesday, June 24 to do some badly needed clean up. Between the ice storm in February, the vandalism in March, and the tornado in May, the Post’s building and grounds have received a beating this year. Thanks to those who were there: Bill Brewer, Gene Silvey, Jerry Garrison, Irvin Reynolds, Pat Anderson, and Jim and Carol Probasco.
A couple of large trees damaged by the ice and tornado had to be cut down. Bill, Gene, and Jerry took this one down behind the pavilion.

Jerry, Pat, and Gene finished taking the tree down that was by the east corner of the building. Several more trees behind the building still need trimming or to be cut down.

Irv and Bill cleaned around the flagpole and put in a nice stone base with rocks. Here Jim is telling them how much better the area looks. Jim was taking a break from installing electrical wiring in the pavilion which was damaged by the tornado.

Work on the office is coming along slowly but the end is in sight. Over the past few months the office has been gutted and new walls, wiring, lighting, and a metal door installed. A contractor recently finished mudding the walls and added an orange peel texture. So Carol started painting the ceiling and walls on Tuesday then finished on Wednesday. On July 7, the carpet will be installed. Thanks to Diana Anderson for getting the carpet.

The Post looks great with its new roof, the pavilion rebuilt, the trees taken care of, and the flagpole base renovated.

On Flag Day, members of the Post’s Honor Guard performed a flag retirement ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on the Square in downtown Ava. Members performing the ceremony were Pat Anderson, Gene Crites , Jim Probasco, Irvin Reynolds , and Gene Silvey. This was the first time we held our annual Flag Day ceremony on the Square.

Those attending appreciated the shade provided by the gazebo while waiting for the ceremony to begin. Refreshments of lemonade and cookies were provided.

On Jun 12, members of the Post’s Honor Guard and Ladies Auxiliary spent the day presenting eight patriotism classes to almost 140 DOW Camp attendees and counselors. During the classes, we explained the history and importance of several patriotic holidays -- Loyalty Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, POW/MIA Day, and Veterans Day. We handed out their choice of a flag keychain or flag refrigerator magnet to each person who attended the classes.

Richard Stitt, Pat Anderson, Jim Probasco, Gene Silvey, and Irvin Reynolds conducted the POW/MIA “white table” remembrance ceremony, while Post member Carol Probasco (taking the photos) and Aux members Dolores Barnum and Fonda Stovall observed along with the campers.

Pat, Irv, Gene, Carol, Dolores, and Fonda enjoyed the lunch break.

Accepting a check for $3,000 from Post Commander Pat Anderson is Misty Jordan, a DOW Camp board member. DOW Camp is a 4-day summer camp for youths ages 8-12 from Douglas, Ozark, and Wright counties and is supported mainly by donations. Our donation helped at least 60 children attend the camp. This was our third year supporting this very worthy program.

Jim, Dolores, Fonda, Pat, and Gene posed for a photo op with the kids.

Also, Post Chaplain Adrain Owen said the prayer, and Troy Herd fired the salute with members of the American Legion.

Post member Jack Thorne appreciated that the weather was nice enough so he could attend the service.

Many of the men and women from the Post and Auxiliary spent their time over the 3-day Memorial Day weekend helping to raise money through Buddy Poppy donations. Their hard work resulted in us collecting more than $1,650 to go toward helping local veterans in need. Gene Silvey and Buddy Poppy chairman, Jerry Garrison, are shown standing in front of Wal-Mart.

Memorial Day is more than just a three-day weekend and a chance to get the year’s first sunburn. Here’s a handy 10-pack of facts to give the holiday some perspective.
Memorial Day was a response to the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War, in which some 620,000 soldiers on both sides died. The loss of life and its effect on communities throughout the North and South led to spontaneous commemorations of the dead:
• In 1864, women from Boalsburg, Pa., put flowers on the graves of their dead from the just-fought Battle of Gettysburg. The next year, a group of women decorated the graves of soldiers buried in a Vicksburg, Miss., cemetery.
• In April 1866, women from Columbus, Miss., laid flowers on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. It was recognized at the time as an act of healing sectional wounds. In the same month, up in Carbondale, Ill., 219 Civil War veterans marched through town in memory of the fallen to Woodlawn Cemetery, where Union hero Maj. Gen. John A. Logan delivered the principal address. The ceremony gave Carbondale its claim to the first organized, community-wide Memorial Day observance.
