Dept of Mo General Orders for March 2010 -

Commander Walker's March statement

Posted at 04:19 PM on Monday, March 1, 2010 by post5168

My Fellow VFW Veterans, Auxiliary Members, and Friends,

What can I say about February, WOW what a month!!!!!!

We had the distinct honor of naming WWII Veteran Bill Daily as Veteran of The Month.  The Post was filled to capacity for Bill in his honor.  He was given a certificate of Appreciation, a certificate of Recognition from Senator John McCain, and Mike Womack, Commander of the MOPH, presented Bill with the Silver Star Banner.  Bill is also a 66 year member of the V F W.  He was presented with a pin to commemorate this milestone.  Bill was presented with many gifts from our local businesses here in Forsyth that sponsor our Veteran of The Month Program and we thank them so much for being a part of this great Program.

Valentine’s Day was a hit.  Everyone had a fantastic time dancing to the music of the Drifters as they performed some of their well known hits.

There was great food and I had the pleasure of dancing with Bea Githens who showed me how it’s really done.

We are preparing a benefit for Brother Member Joe Gilmore.  As many of you know, Joe’s house burned to the ground and he suffered the loss of his son in that blaze.  We would like to show our support to Joe and his family on Sunday March 7th here at the Post when we will be working together with the Elk’s Lodge to support Joe.  There will be a silent auction and raffles and food will be served.  Bobby Maxwell of the Drifters will perform and this will all take place on the 7th between 2pm and 6 pm.  An account has been established at People’s Bank in Forsyth for anyone wanting to donate and help Joe get re-established.

Thank you to everyone who works so hard in preparing for all these events.  We will continue to do all we can to support our Veterans, friends and the Community.

Next month we will be holding nominations for Officers.  Please consider a position for the upcoming year.  Join us at the next meeting on March 15th at 7:00 PM.

Don’t forget St. Patrick’s Day when we will be serving Corned Beef & Cabbage and enjoying the music of Wayne & Roy.

Thanks to all for your continued help and support and I’ll see you at the Post

With Honor, Pride, & Dignity, we are the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Respectfully Submitted

Walker Sumner,

Commander

Posted at 03:13 PM on Monday, February 22, 2010 by post5168

Commander Walker Sumner presents Veteran Of The Month awards to Bill Daily.

PFC William H. Daily was born March 28, 1916 in Salem, Indiana

On April 18, 1944 at the age of 28, Bill was drafted into the Army in Indianapolis, Indiana. After completing basic training, He was assigned to the 346th Infantry Regiment, 87th Division.   He served for 2 years in Germany as a truck driver- hauling ammunition. He was a POW for 4 months and during that time he was moved to 4 different camps.  He was wounded in the Knee at SAAR Basin, Germany December 11, 1944 while he was being transferred from one prison camp to another. He says he would like to forget that time as he remembers that their own aircraft bombed them because the American Air Force did not know they were being held in those buildings.  He was discharged on December 27th, 1945 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

He has been awarded the Good Conduct Medal, 2-year Service Award, Purple Heart, American Theatre Ribbon, EAME Theatre Ribbon w/ 2 Bronze Stars, and the WWII Victory Medal.

After discharge, he went back to sign painting.

Bill and his wife Florence have been married for 71 years.  They were married after knowing each other for only one month, having been on only 4 dates.  They have one son, named Thomas.

Bill has been a member of the VFW since 1944 and is an active member of the local DAV chapter 55 here in Forsyth.  He has driven the DAV van that takes Veterans to their doctor appointments and he has also served as Chaplain.

Bill and his wife Florence are members of Forsyth Christian Church where Bill plays the organ and piano and they are also regular visitors to the Forsyth Friendship Center.

We have the distinct honor in naming Bill Daily as our new Veteran of The Month.
