John J Ryan New 3944 MO Member at 93

Posted at 08:52 PM on Saturday, March 13, 2010 by District 12 Missouri

Mr. John J. (Jack) Ryan realized a seventy year long dream when he became a member of the Veterans of Foreign War. "I always wanted to become a member of the VFW" he said. But because of family responsibilities, his job, and caring for his daughter, just never could justify taking any personal time away from everything he had to do at home. Now, at 93 he feels that it is the right time.
Jack joined the Army in 1936 and served with the 6th Infantry prior to WWII and got out of the military in 1938. When WWII began he knew that his country needed him. He joined the Navy in 1941. Serving in the Atlantic and the Pacific on different ships, he found himself facing many combat situations that he finds difficult to talk about but loved every minute of it. He got out of the Navy in 1946 and went home to his wife and daughter. In 1951 he was drafted into the Marine Corps and served for a few years.
A true patriot, Jack worked hard for years providing for his family and knew that someday would come and he would have the time to join the "Best Veterans Organization in the World, the VFW". On March 11, 2010, VFW Post 3944 Commander Tom Mundell and Quartermaster Jack Brown went to Mr. Ryan's home and presented to him the VFW Membership Application that he proudly signed, and happily stated, "My life is complete now. I hope that I can offer your post some help. I may need a ride once in awhile, my eyes and ears aren't what they used to be. But I can still work hard and be productive."
