May 2009 Mtn Grove VFW Meeting

Posted at 10:38 PM on Saturday, May 9, 2009 by IJK in Post 3770 Meetings

The area experienced a severe wind storm with heavy rain on the morning of May 8.  Post 3770 had several trees damaged to various degrees but we were lucky that none fell on the building.  The post still had no electricity the morning of the 9th but Lloyd Darter the manager of the Mtn Grove Airport brought us a small generator shortly before the meeting was to begin and coffee was made but not done prior to the meeting.  We took a short break during the meeting when the coffee was ready but had to do without our customary breakfast.
VFW Post 3770 awards the post scholarships each year just before the May meeting and this year was no exception.  The recipients are pictured below receiving the first half of their scholarships.  The second half will be awarded after the successful completion of their first semester.

Commander Allen Dodds Jr. and Mtn Grove recipient Jessica Jarrett.

Commander Allen Dodds Jr and Norwood recipient Samantha Watts

Commander Allen Dodds Jr and Liberty Faith Christian Academy recipient Michael Hawley

District 18 Commander Charlie Dickinson honored us by attending our meeting today.  Commander Dickinson is from Post 3135, Hartville, Mo and has been District 18 Commander for several years but will be stepping down this year.  He has done an excellent job as District Commander.

The above photos are of the installation of the officers for the ensuing year, 2009-2010.  Life Member, Charter Member and Past Post Commander (1982-83 & 1986-87) Carl Swenson was the installing officer per the request of the Commander - elect Lyman "Pete" Proctor.  "Pete" is also a Post Life Member, Charter Member and Past Post Commander in the years of 1987-88.

Sr-Vice Commander "Pete" Proctor preparing breakfast.  Comrade Proctor was nominated for the office of Commander during the nomination process of the business meeting.

Becky Davis, of the Mtn Grove Senior Center spoke to us before the meeting concerning the need for funds due to their recent loss of the building to a fire.  Insurance will cover  replacing the building but they are a little shy of being able to get the equipment they need.  The Mtn Grove Senior Center will be having a fundraiser at the Mtn Grove Y on Thursday, March 19th.  The Senior Center provides "Miles for Meals" for homebound residents of the county, space for a free tax preparation for seniors project, space for a veteran representative, space for Ozarks Independent Living .  The new building for the Senior Center will be at the Cedar Center on E Business 60.  She gave an interesting talk and answered many questions from the members in attendance.

Shawn Dodds, a freshman student at Mtn Grove High School and a member of the Mtn Grove JROTC, spoke to us prior to the meeting and told us of his desire to be able to attend "Football Camp" during the summer break.  He stated that he already had saved $100 of the $300 needed and that he was trying to raise the rest.  It was his first public speaking experience and he did fine. His parents and grandparents should be proud of him.

The photos in the table below were taken prior and during the meeting.  If you were at the meeting you may be in one of the photos so look closely.  Right "click" and then choose "view image" from the drop down menu to see them in a larger size.
