Mountain Grove VFW Post 3770 hosted the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. The Comrades got started by folding all the tables and picking up the chairs around 9:00 a.m. The Blood Center Truck arrived around 10:45 and then the comrades set to unloading it for the staff. This is a popular community activity and we always have plenty of help on hand. Comrades helping with tables and chairs were: John Dodds, & Leonard Kennon. Comrades that were able to help with tables and chairs and wait to unload the truck were: Don Williams, Kenneth Flinchum, Jim "Grumpy" Smith, Commander Allen Dodds Jr, Service Officer Ed Hawley, and Quartermaster Iris Joe Kelley. Commander Dodds, Service Officer Hawley and Quartermaster Kelley took turns manning the table and ensuring that all donors were welcomed and signed in. The day finally ended and Comrades Kenneth Flinchum, Sr-Vice Commander Pete Proctor, Commander Dodds and Service Officer Hawley were on hand to reload the truck and put the tables and chairs back in place. Post volunteers contributed 30 1/2 combined hours to the effort. Comrades Jim "Grumpy" Smith, Lester Moore, Kenneth Flinchum, and Pete Proctor donated blood during the drive.
Post 3770 Ladies Auxiliary Sisters Alice Kingsland, Leah Swanger, Delores Cochran, Arlene Roark and Doshie Brill manned the canteen. Sisters Cynthia Morgan, Evelyn Lawson, Bonnie Harris, Alice Kingsland, Diane Gooch, Delores Cochran, and Doshie Brill provided home made cookies for the blood donors.
A total of 33 units of blood were collected making this another successful blood drive.

Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 11:08 AM
by IJK
The crowd was small,as you can see,
the wind it was blustery.
On the square at 9:00 a.m.
we raised the flag once again.
The sun was bright but wasn't warm
as we gathered on this morn.
The ceremony was short and sweet
so we weren't long on our feet.
Members of Post 3770 and the Ladies Auxiliary gathered on the Mountain Grove Public Square this morning and held a "Color Ceremony" in tribute to "Medal Of Honor" Day. Those participating were: Ed Hawley (at the flagpole), (then left to right), Jim "Grumpy" Smith, Leonard Kennon, Les McCallister, Leah Swanger, Natty Kennon, Charles "Chuck" Taylor. Not shown were Allen Dodds Jr., Scott Overholser and Iris Joe Kelley.

by IJK
Mtn Grove VFW Post 3770 hosted a "Pot Luck" dinner at noon today, February 16, 2008. Forty-five members and guests gathered to enjoy a meal and visiting after a week of stressful weather. One Sister prepared a ham, one Sister prepared a turkey w/dressing, one Sister supplied sweet and sour chicken and cashew chicken. Some of the Sisters went on to provide potatoes, sweet potatoes, salads(of many kinds), corn, green beans, baked beans, sourkraut, and the Comrades joined the Sisters in bringing desserts. A delicious meal was enjoyed by all in attendance, and all had all they wished to eat. We had more young children than we had ever had attend. Below is a slide show of those attending. If I missed you I apologize, it was not on purpose. Thanks to the Sisters and the Comrades who provided such a great meal. I am already looking forward to the next one. Shame on you if you missed it

Mtn Grove Post 3770 Observes "Sinking of the USS Maine"
Friday, February 15, 2008 at 07:32 PM
by IJK
The sky was overcast, it was breezy and 26 degrees when five Comrades and one Sister and her six year old granddaughter gathered on the Mtn Grove Public Square about a quarter to nine this morning to observe the 110th Anniversary of the "Sinking of the USS Maine" . The commemoration began with the bugle call "First Call" followed by the order to "Present Arms" then the bugle call " To The Colors". The National Anthem was played while all were still at attention (the little girl stood with her hand over her heart the entire time - never moving or wavering despite the cold). The command "Order Arms" was given followed by the bugle call "Carry On". All were then dismissed to find a warm spot.
While the group was waiting for 9:00 a.m. sharp, the "Sinking of the USS Maine" was discussed and that led to a short discussion of the United States role in the "Boxer Rebellion".
The USS Maine was sank in Havana Harbor, Cuba on February 15, 1898 and plunged the United States into the Spanish-American War. America's first worldwide war and the veterans from that war formed the veterans organization that became the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
To read more about the sinking and the subsequent events go to
USS Maine
It is complete with photos and a very interesting read.
