District 18 November meeting

The 18th District, Department of Missouri held its quarterly meeting on November 3rd at VFW Post 5993, Ava. Several Department notables were in attendance among the many members of the 18th District.

Department of Missouri Sr-Vice Commander Tom Hartman was the official Dept Rep for the meeting. Above he and 18th district Commander Charlie Dickinson are sharing a joke.

Here Sr-Vice Commander Hartman is a bit more serious as he speaks to us about the importance of the "Community Activity Reports", the need for District meetings to be informative, the Department Veteran Service Officer Program and the need to make donations for the program. He also spoke on the member-at-large program and he stressed the need to recruit female veterans into the VFW. He also informed us of the Veterans Week in Branson that will be held November 5th through the 12th.

Asst. Chief-of-Staff David Cartner reminded us of the importance of the "Guest Books" in post lounges, and during the joint meeting held in the afternoon he stressed the need to provide donations to the Missouri Cottage at the National Home.

National Recruiter Lyle Seelinger is shown here with Post 5993 member Irvin Reynolds, and he spoke on the Veterans Service Officer program and urged members to carry referral forms with them as they attended Veterans Day programs throughout the area.

Department Surgeon Joe Lundy reported on the recent MAVO Hearings being held throughout the state and urged everyone to try to attend and be sure to wear our official VFW caps.
There were 10 District 18 Posts represented at the meeting with 8 Post Commanders, 6 Post Quartermaster and 6 Post Service Officers present. There were 35 members of District 18 in attendance and 3 guests from outside the District.
The above slideshow is the Post Commanders that were caught by camera.

The above four photos are of the "White Table" Ceremony as presented by the Post 5993 Honor Guard

Ladies Auxiliary District 18 President Helen "Susie" Dodds

Ladies Auxiliary Post 5993 President Marianne Goodwater.
The above Picture Reel is various photos of those in attendance. Since I do not know everyones name I will not name just a few of them.
All but a couple of the photos are provided courtesy of D. Hutchison of Post 1828. Thank him when you see him with his camera at the next District meeting to be held at West Plains Post 1828 on February 9, 2008.

New Kid on the Block with District 18 Meeting at Cabool Photos

by dist18
Joe Kelley decided to turn me loose on the District 18 Blog and post my photos directly instead of sending them through him for posting. He may have turned loose a monster!
Incidentally, I'm Daniel Hutchinson from Post 1828 in West Plains. At one time I was the district senior vice and VOD chairman but had to pull out of active work in the district because of family problems. I'm back and now the two Joe's (Lundy and Kelley) are trying to put me back to work again. I may have to steer clear of them... they're a little too eager to get me back with a job title or two behind my name!
Oh well, on with the show... I barely got to Cabool VFW Post 473 in time for the meeting because of receiving a phone call on the way there and pulling over to finish the call. When I did arrive, I had to park in the back of the post because of the crowd. When I say crowd, I mean CROWD! District Commander Dickinson remarked during the meeting that only one post was missing representation which was a record. Great job, District 18!
The meeting was called to order with opening ceremonies and Commander Dickinson performing his duties.
Sitting up front with Charley was Department Commander Jerry Jones
and, the person that turned me loose on your blog site... Adjutant Joe Kelley.
The meeting went along smoothly... well, until Charley invited Bob Wonnell, Department VSIO, to speak to the attending members.
Of course Bob couldn't keep from taking a friendly shot at Joe Lundy which, without fail, brought a response from Joe a bit later on in the meeting. For the moment though, he just grinned and waited his turn.
On the serious side, Bob Wonnell explained the Veteran Service Information Officer (VSIO) program to attendees with several questions being asked and situations surfaced which Deparment Commander Jones promised looking into.
Post 10967 at Roby was presented their certificates at this meeting because of being unable to stay for the combined meeting scheduled for after lunch. Shown here is Department Commander Jones (left) presenting George Graner with stack of certificates and I do mean a stack!
Soon after the above presentation, we were turned loose for lunch so I didn't take long to find a seat in the main room of the post. Lunch was announced and, after waiting on our turn, we moved into the lunch line. As usual, the food was excellent and there was plenty of it!
After I finished eating, I started looking around for possible photos. There was no shortage of subjects for photos so I started doing some shooting. Since we were in the Ladies Auxiliary meeting area, it was logical to get a shot of the Department President, Jeri Sherwood. Here, she's with her husband, Roy I believe, standing and waiting an introduction.
I'd say you probably weren't on the ball if you didn't manage to get some of the more colorful members of District 18 captured on the camera. Here's one of the most colorful, Ed Hawley, District Veterans Service Information Officer (VSIO) giving me one of those looks that says "go ahead, make my day!" Why not! So I did!
There were several posts that received awards but I would have a lot of trouble identifying the folks in the shots if I tried to post them. This is the trouble I'm running into because I don't know a lot of the folks in other posts besides my own by name. It would take a second person that's familiar with the district sitting beside me writing down names for me to do the job right... I'll see what I can do about that next time.

Good friends and comrades Joe Lundy and Kathie Lee both graced us with their presence at the District 18 meeting. Both are running for State Surgeon this year and both are extremely well qualified.
Kathie spoke to us about what she wishes to accomplish but Joe declined an invitation to speak as he said 'We all knew him anyway and know what he stands for". Thank you to both of them for attending.

A couple of shots of the dessert table. "Thank you" to the members of the District Ladies Auxiliaries for providing such goodies.

The main meal was catered by Maj James Miller, Ret. USMC, of Millers Smoked Meats, of Fordland, Mo. He provided pork and beef, baked beans, corn-on-cob, rolls, 'real' butter and lemonade. It was delicious. He always does an outstanding job.
