District 18 VSIO attends West Plains "Listening Post"

    The Missouri Veterans Commission along with AMVETS, American Legion, DAV, and the VFW held a "Listening Post" at AMVETS Post 98 in West Plains, Missouri on Oct 20,2009.  Approximately 60 people attended.  The "Listening Posts" are aimed at assessing the needs of Missouri veterans.
    Three members of the 18th District VFW attended;  District 18 VSIO Ed Hawley (Post 3770),  Post 3009 Service Officer Bill Moriarty and Post 5993 Commander Jerry Garrison.

Larry Kay, Executive Director of the MVC, spoke on the VA Hospitals int he state. Pat Rowe Ker, State Veterans Ombudsmanand Director of "Operation Outreach"

Successful Veterans Information Benefit Fair in District 18

    Friday, August 14, 2009 found District 18 VSIO Ed Hawley of Mtn Grove Post 3770 with the assistance of Ava Post 5993 Commander Jerry Garrison and Ava Post 5993 Quartermaster Shannon Willhaus attending the annual Skyline Fire Dept Picnic.

District 18 School of Instruction

    The School of Instruction for the 18th District, Department of Mo was held at Cabool Post 473 on Saturday, July 25, 2009.  Each post in the District had at least one representative present and six posts had their Commanders, Quartermasters and Service Officers present. Nine Post Commanders , eight Post Quartermasters and seven Post Service Officers were present. There was a total of 30 District members and 3 guests from outside the District; Dept Commander Dave Morgan, Dept Chief of Staff Earl Boyer (Post 1831) and Past District 3 Commander Robert Eckerle (Post 7356).
    District Commander Vernon "Butch" LaMont opened the meeting and got right to work.  Commander Morgan presented the District Commander cap to Commander LaMont and Commander LaMont presented the Past District Commanders Pin to Charlie Dickinson.
Each post stood and was recognized. 
   
Commander LaMont made a very informative presentation and one could tell he had really thought it out. District VSIO Ed Hawley gave a great presentation about the Veteran Service Officer Program and some of the changes in reporting.    Blogmaster Joe Kelley spoke on the Dept WebMail and how to access and use it.  The National E-Membership, Post query and Memstats were covered also.  Comrade Eckerle joined Kelley and enhanced the presentation.
     Commander Morgan spoke on many subjects of importance to further the aims of the VFW and the Dept of Mo. It was a very interesting meeting and all who came had to learn something.

    Jim Dixon, the final Post Commander of Post 6508, Houston is flanked by District Commander LaMont (left) and Mo Commander Morgan (right) as he relinquishes the post charter.  Post 6508 has closed and they were able to make a donation for $50,000 to the Mo Veterans Service Officer Program during the Mo Dept Convention held in June.

Post 6508, Houston, Mo makes Donatrion to VSO Fund

    Outgoing District 18 Commander, Charlie Dickinson, presents a check for $50,000.00 from the sale of Houston Post Home #6508 to State Commander Dave Morgan. State Commander Morgan expressed his sincere regret that the post situation had come to this. He further expressed his appreciation and thanks to Houston Post Members for their contribution and support of the Veterans Service Officer Program. Proceeds were donated to the Veterans Service Officer Program.

Veterans Memorial Dedication at Winona, Mo

    District18 Commander Charlie Dickinson, District 18 VSIO Ed Hawley and Post 3009 Service Officer Bill Moriarty attended the ceremony dedicating the new Veterans Memorial in Winona, Mo on September 6, 2008.  The dedication ceremony consisted of a prayer followed by the National Anthem and the song America the Beautiful and then the dedication speech by Winona Mayor Rick Stevens.  It was a beautiful day and well attended.
