Leading through Tough Times

Posted at 07:05 PM on Saturday, November 7, 2009 by Missouri

This article is reproduced from the VFW Checkpoint news November/December 2009 edition:

Written by Missouri’s own Quartermaster General, Larry Maher

In these times of diminishing resources and membership, it’s important to show good leadership to guide VFW through the difficulties.  Here are some things to keep in mind as you navigate these turbulent waters.
Keep your goals visible.  Spend some time thinking about what’s really important to the future of the organization.  What needs to change?  What can you stop doing or supporting?  What two or three activities would have the greatest positive impact?  Take time to get input from your members.  Then write your plan for the year and share it with those who can help you implement it.
Develop Teams.  Every member of your team needs to have the skills and attitude to help us be successful.  Share your vision.  Help them develop the skills they need.  Get rid of people who are not contributing.  Remember to reward people for a job well done.  As a leader, you can’t accomplish much by yourself.  You need others who are willing, able, and enthusiastic about helping to carry out your plans.
Demonstrate ethics and integrity.  Hard times can put the best to the test.  As a VFW leader, your actions need to be beyond question.  Display integrity, honesty and selflessness in all you do.
Think creatively.  Sometimes we get stuck in a rut doing things like we’ve always done them.  Look for new solutions and new ideas.
Communicate, communicate, communicate.  In a big organization, it’s important to communicate frequently and through multiple channels.  Use newsletters, web sites, e-mail, personal contact, telephone, mail and local media to communicate VFW’s mission, your programs, activities, and priority to members, potential members and the public.
Being a leader in the VFW can be both rewarding and challenging.  Done right, it can bring out the best in you and your team.
