About the MAP
« on: April 03, 2007, 08:38:34 pm »
The VFW Military Assistance Program (MAP) is the outstretched hand between the VFW and active duty, Guard, and Reserve military units. MAP offers grants to VFW Posts who participate in military unit functions, such as sponsoring "Farewell and Welcome Home Activities," "Family Readiness Group" events, or other sponsorship ideas.

MAP also links with VFW’s Operation Uplink and Unmet Needs programs to create an all-star team of military assistance. MAP and Operation Uplink have provided more than 200 computers to set up Internet Cafes where servicemembers’ families may e-mail their deployed loved ones.

In addition, MAP has forged partnerships with various service providers, including www.vetjobs.com, aimed at providing the transitioning service member with relocation and employment assistance.

For more information, call the MAP office at (816) 756-3390, ext 211; Fax: (816) 968-2728 or email: map@vfw.org

I am all for the MAP projects EXCEPT where they give out money to VFW Posts too lazy to earn their own money for the projects they wish to do.  VFW Posts that wish to do something need their own source of funding.  We WORK for ours so I am against making donations from my Post funds to give to the lazy ones.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the info.
I am the Post Chief of Staff. Our local Guard unit will be deployed early in 2009. We hope to be as supportive as we can.

This thread is eerily quiet, considering that MAP is supposed to be a big focus of the VFW and a big story in the December VFW Magazine.  ???
We have not had any success at getting a response from our local "family readiness group." However, in rounding up dues, we have found two (so far) members who will be redeployed with the Wisconsin Guard.  Now we have someone to send stuff to.

Is ANYONE involved with MAP?

http://www.unmetneeds.com/

An example; according to this site, UNMET needs alone has helped 1,146 families in almost all states. There is a map with a breakdown what amounts the states recieved such as 0-10k, 10-50k, and 50k+, with families recieving 0-15k in seven states. This seems to show that it is another good program.

IJK, noticed that you said your post works for their MAP functions, since that is what Redmax described. How many troops is your Post sponsoring and what sort of functions are you doing. Always interested in ideas.
