Can anyone tell me what rakkasans means? Also, is the Multi National Forces Observers Medal a qualifier for membership? A friend's wife & I are trying to see if her husband may be eligible. I have a copy of his DD214, but cannot find anything on VFW website to confirm. I know he served 6 months overseas (Egypt), served 3 years & 8 months as 11B20 infantry, last duty assignment FORSCOM FC Co B 3/187th Abn Div (AASLT), transferred to HHC 364th ENGR Gp. Don't know if he received hostile or imminent danger pay.

The 187th Infantry Regiment (Rakkasans) is a regiment of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) of the United States Army.

The regimental motto is the Latin "Ne Desit Virtus" ("Let Valor Not Fail"). The nickname "Rakkasan" is an Anglicization, of the combined Japanese terms "rakka" (which means "falling down") and "san" (which is a term of respect). It might be loosely rendered "parachute man", and refers to the airborne assault forces descending from the sky. The name was given to the 187th during its tour in occupied Japan following World War II.

as far as eligibility goes you have to go by VFW MOP Manual of Operations.
Hope this helps a little as you did not give dates or places served.
