In 1993 there were over 30 and now in 2009 just 21.
Along with them went membership numbers.

About 15 years ago, for a Department or District to get All State or All American, they had to institute so many new Posts. That effort is now bitting them in the ***. It cut into neighborhoods that was keeping other Posts up and they got them going , said thanks, and were gone without support. This prompted some of the Posts to feel 'it is ours now'. Now, with the push to 'go by the book', many chose not to make the transition and wind up closing one way or another. We have ont going that way in my District now.

Keeping a Post alive is work and is not difficult. It is time consuming though.
We lost 3 Posts in our District this year due to apathy and officer burn-out.
Nobody wanted to perform their duty as an officer of the post and too lazy to
recruit new members who could get involved. One was homeless and met at
a firehouse, another consolidated, and the third Post lost their building in addition
to their charter because they were to lazy to have a meeting to vote on
consolidating with another post.

Do you think there should be an upper limit on the number of Posts in a District?

I have been saying this for the past 3 years here in VA.
We are looking at redistricting here and it is not easy.I feel the District size should be able to be managed easily by one person (District Commander) but if you start adding Districts and shrinking the number of Post in the Districts then you also cut down on the available number of members with leadership ability's to hold office and be effective.

In Missouri, we have a couple of Past Dept Cds going around researching Post viability to determine what options are available. This will include District options as well. Should be an interesting report when done.
