post8271-jvc,
Welcome to the forums and to the VFW.  We look forward to your input here.  Thanks for your service and for your interest in the VFW.  I really do not see an option but to retain the current cover as it is recognized easily as denoting a veteran under it.

Imagine telling members they all have to buy new caps, that would go over well.  Shocked

You are so right about the over-abundance of pins on VFW caps, and coat lapels as well. All of those pins lose their meaning when they are crowded in with a bunch of other pins.  The national organization has tried to regulate the wearing of pins on the official cap to no avail.

If a guys wants to wear 200 pins on his VFW cap I say we let 'em. I think it looks kind of goofy but to each their own. I wear my wings, my CAB and a 10th Mountain pin on mine...organized neatly.

However, I think honor guard caps shouldn't have any pins on them since uniformity plays a major role in presenting a professional appearance.

I agree with you DMH1566. Members should be able to wear as many pins as they want.  I hope to see you at Department Convention this year.

;)DMH: I agree with you about the goofy part, and the concern about how an honor guard looks, that is why I believe too many pins is tacky, inappropriate, braggy, make your head pull to one side, etc.  (Pick your favorite reason)

Comrades:
After years of wearing a Dixie Cup, I had thought the VFW cover was a real big step forward.
Especially if wearing britches, with a belt, as both could be folded and inserted in the belt with no fear of loss.
With wear & tear causing a chrome dome I feel the VFW cover should be the required cover as not easily blown overboard and much warmer.
Pins?  Only pin I wear is a spare safety pin in case I break a smallclothes drawstring.
So sayeth World War Two!

Head gear should represent and have meaning to the organization / outfit for which it represents. When I was required to wear a uniform my required head gear was a beret.... long before the Army decided to change their uniform identity, uniform heritage and tradition.....

The VFW has a long standing history, heritage and tradition and I feel changing the head gear because younger vets don't like it is the wrong answer. Besides, if that is the descriminating factor that curtails them from joining you have to ask yourself "is that the kind of member you want joining."

The VFW needs to stand their ground and maintain that which sets it apart!

You are mistaken. There is no requirement that anyone must wear a VFW cap at a meeting.

It amazes me that we would discontinue the traditional VFW Cap based on a marketing analysis. The entire military is steeped in tradition. Why would that stop at the door of the VFW post?  I just don't get it. I just joined the VFW last month and I regret that I waited so long (Desert Storm Vet). I don't know why I waited so long, but I'm certain that it had nothing to do with a disdain for tradition. A baseball cap would be fine with me for casual wear, but the traditional cap should be kept and worn proudly--Not Discontinued.
