A bitter pill to swallow, regarding membership in Veterans organizations. I was the first VN vet to join the Evans, CO post, 6624, in Nov. 1965. My dad, WWI (St. Miheal), older brothers, WWII, (Iwo/Saipan), Korea. Obviously members from WWI through VN, if my son joined that post it could add the First Gulf War for the family. But, to the point. One of my eldest brothers was also amember of the American Legion. We drove to the Legion hall in Greeley, and my brother inquired as to my eligability as a VN vet. We were told, by the person on duty at the bar, some sort of AL officer as I recall that the AL had not determiend yet if VN vets were eligable. My brother was quite upset, "I know guys in the AL that haven't been outside the 9th hole of the Greeley golf course". I, consequently, did not join and my brother never renewed his membership. As to post 6624, the last time I was there they had not put the member poster board back up, listing living and deceased past members. They had taken it down to paint the wall. I check that board everytime I visit. I grew up with a lot of those guys. I hope, out of respect, "lest we forget", that membership board is back where it should be.
