The VFW Department of North Carolina, the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel/Koury Convention Center, and the city of Greensboro are hosting the annual Southern Conference meeting from 3-5 November. It will be the first time in 14 years that this massive meeting, attended by delegates from all 14 of the southern states, is being held in the Tarheel State. One of four conferences within the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Southern Conference consists of the states of West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Once every four years on a rotating basis, each conference chooses its candidate for National Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief of the entire VFW, a position that leads two years later to National Commander-in-Chief. Attending this year at the Southern Conference will be Glen Gardner, the National Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief, hailing from the state of Texas.
The Department of North Carolina and the city of Greensboro are going all out to ensure that the hundreds of VFW comrades and Ladies Auxiliary members receive a warm welcome. The city has offered to provide a trip around historic Greensboro and has given out thousands of maps and pamphlets, a golf tournament will be played at the prestigious Grandover Golf Course, and a trip to view the Seagrove Pottery area is planned.
