WASHINGTON (January 10, 2007) -- The national commander of America's largest organization of combat veterans is hopeful that President Bush's decisions to increase the number of U.S. forces in Iraq, as well as the economic and diplomatic initiatives announced, will be the final keys needed by the Iraqi government to stabilize its own country.

"We recognize that previous strategies over the prosecution of the war in Iraq have not all gone as envisioned, yet we must remain hopeful that these decisions are a step in the right direction," said Gary Kurpius, who leads the 2.4 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries.

"The VFW recognizes that Iraq is the centerpiece in the Global War on Terrorism, and we stand united in our support of the troops and the commander-in-chief of our armed forces as they fight this new enemy."

The VFW also welcomes the fresh perspective of a new defense and diplomatic team, and the oversight of a new Congress, provided that everyone remains focused on what is practical, achievable, and in the best interests of the nation as a whole, especially those in uniform who want to be victorious in their mission and return home to their families.

"Success in Iraq by any definition is ultimately in the hands of the Iraqi government and its people, but forward progress is what we expect," said Kurpius, a Vietnam veteran from Anchorage, Alaska. "We hope the new initiatives will prove to be the jumpstart the Iraqi government needs, because the current situation is a stalemate at best, and our patience is not unlimited."
