Started the day at Rocky Mount with overcast skies. Carl Smith arrived with Precious (his dog) at the start and provided Rear Guard for our March the entire day. Thank you, Carl.
We did a radio interview with WZAX at 0750hrs and our daily Fox 35 Update at 0830hrs.
Then the rains came down and stayed with us ALL DAY. We have had a very busy day nursing injured feet and attempting to keep them dry. Today was a day of trial, but we have overcome the obstacles and believe we will be better prepared for tomorrow’s forecasted rains. HOOAH!
Special Thanks to Chief Wagstaff, Police Chief in Whitaker, NC C who personally escorted us through his lovely town and on the outskirts into Edgecomb County where Sheriffs Deputies were waiting for us. The inclement weather was treacherous and without the continual support of Edgecomb County and Halifax County Sheriffs and Enfield PD, we would not have maintained our schedule. Thank you, to our heroes in Law Enforcement.
The constant rains kept most people inside today, but motorists were constantly honking to offer support and a few stalwarts were our offering support including Mike Deese who was waiting on the roadside offering support and a contribution. Thank you, Mike and to all of you who got very wet just to say hello and offer support.
After 25 miles of torturous weather we arrived at our REWARD for the day at our final destination at the Halifax School Board Offices, south of Halifax, NC where we were greeted by many well wishers and Resolve to Win Supporters. Noah Joyner, 1st Vice Cdr, American Legion Post 38 (Weldon, NC) greeted us with his son, Michael. Pearl Powell and her mother Betty were there with greeting for Roanoke Rapids and the VFW in Missouri. William and Susan Hodge (Roanoke Rapids), Jack and Dorothy Pullman (Halifax), Jean Reaves (Roanoke Rapids), Charles Chambliss (Asst Superintendant Halifax Co. Schools) and Gerald Wright, Mayor of Halifax were there among other supporters and well wishers.
American Legion Post 38 was our host this evening for a wonderful meal at Ralphs Barbeque and provided our lodging accommodations for the evening. We had the privilege of dining with our hosts Noah and Jane Joyner, Weldon Chief of Police Mark Mason, Wayne King (Financial Officer), Andy Boone (Post Adjutant) and Michael Joyner. Thank you for your support and tremendous hospitality. You made our day.
God Bless America.
We will see you on the road tomorrow between Halifax, NC and just south of Emporia, VA.
Dennis
