Wreaths at NH Veterans Cemetery

Posted at 11:19 AM on Saturday, November 7, 2009 by New Hampshire Blog Master

Good morning everyone - So many of you have asked if we have any plans to place wreaths (as was done in 2007) at the Veteran's Cemetery in Boscawen.  Below is the official position regarding placing wreaths at Boscawen.  This is the policy at NH State Veterans Cemetery as of November 1, 2009:  The NH State Veterans Cemetery will have one ceremony every December that will coincide with the day that holiday wreaths are placed on the graves at the Arlington National Cemetery and at other cemeteries across the United States.

On Saturday, December 12, 2009, the cemetery staff will support a coordinated effort by veteran support groups, families, and friends to place holiday wreaths on the cemetery facilities to include the main entrance sign, flag poles along the entrance road, grave section markers, and the columbariums. A ceremony, coinciding with similar ceremonies across the United States of America, will be conducted at noon at the Circle of Flags, placing ceremonial wreaths on the military service markers.

The cemetery will not support organizations or groups placing wreaths on individual graves. Per the Cemetery Guidelines, Floral Tributes and Flags for Grave sites, "Holiday wreaths (fresh or artificial) may be placed on grave sites from December 1 through  January 2. Wreath stands are not permitted at any time."

You as an individual can still place a wreath on the individual grave sites.  I did have several WWII widows that could not get to the cemetery but wanted wreaths placed on their husband's graves.  I will contact them - I know one that was so grateful for the help.

I also wanted to let you know that again this year, we are planning to have a Wreath of Remembrance placed in each community across New Hampshire.  If you are interested in participating in this, please email or call me at 529-0812 or 548-8787.  We would like to have the different locations have a ceremony and place the wreath at their towns monument that honors our military.  I have a sample of the ceremony to those that might be interested.

Please pass this information on to others that have asked about the wreaths.

Blessings,                                                                                                                                       Susan Peterson

Annual Life Member Meeting Installs New Trustees and Examines Past Year

Eaton Rapids, Mich. – The VFW National Home for Children hosted the Annual Meeting of Life Members on Saturday, October 24. The Annual Meeting, open to all Life Members of the National Home, examined the past year as well as the future of the National Home.

Highlights of the meeting included the formal installation of new board officers and trustees.  Newly elected trustees Larry Wade, National Home District 3 and Yvonne Crawford, District 4, as well as Al Cantu, who is appointed as District 10 Trustee, were sworn in along with new Board President, Raymond Warren, Vice President, Donna Knapper, and Board Secretary-Treasurer, Garry Goff.

Outgoing District 3 Trustee and Board President, Ron Stensland, District 4 Trustee and Past President, Roger Taylor, and recently retired Trustee, Roy Ator of District 10 were honored during the meeting for their service to the National Home.

The two outgoing Trustees thanked everyone in attendance for their support and expressed their love of the National Home before being presented commemorative photo displays depicting their work for the National Home.  After remarks were made regarding the work and generosity of Past District 10 Trustee, Roy Ator, new District 10 Trustee, Al Cantu, accepted a commemorative photo display on Roy’s behalf.

“It was an honor and a pleasure to serve as a Trustee,” said Stensland, “I wish the new Trustees and officers the best of luck in providing Help, Hope and Honor to our nation’s veterans and their families and I pledge my continued support.”

Taylor shared similar feelings as Stensland adding “I have met and worked with some wonderful people with good hearts who truly care for the children and families of veterans during my time on the board.”

Trustees and friends also honored recently deceased District 7 Trustee, Jim Goldsmith.  Heartfelt stories were shared before a special memorial plaque was presented to Pat Palmer, the sister of Goldsmith.

Executive Director, Patrice Green made an annual report to the membership and thanked them for all their support, love and contributions to the VFW National Home for Children.  The meeting concluded with a slideshow of photos from the past year showing the educational and enriching activities the children and residents were able to experience due to member support.

Since 1925 the VFW National Home for Children has been providing for the children and families of our nation’s veterans, while at the same time serving as a living memorial to our nation’s heroes.  For more information on the National Home, please call (517) 663-1521, toll-free at (800) 424-8360 or visit www.vfwnationalhome.org.

Please disseminate to local Veterans Organizational Leaders,

Recently, I was contacted by a individual claiming to be "Butch (Dayne) Miller".  He claimed that he was a member of our post and his wife died while traveling back from Illinois to Arizona.  He said he sent all of his money on the cremation of his wife and need money for gas to make it back to Sierra Vista.  He mentioned that he had met me at the VFW and know some of the officers.

I told him that I need to convene with are board and this is unusual for us to handle an out of state request.  Our Quarter was not able to verified his membership by name.  I recontacted Mr. Miller and asked him for his local address so I can verify his membership.  He gave an incorrect address of Cardenas Apartment's on Allen Street in Sierra Vista.  There is no record of an Allen Street or Cardenious Appartments.

Mr. Miller has not contacted back.

His contact info:

Butch (Dayne) Miller

417-332-5220 this is a Branson Missouri number.

Veterans Helping Vetrans Group at NH Veterans Home

New Hampshire Veterans Home                                          NEWS RELEASE

139 Winter Street                                                                   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tilton, NH 03276                                                                   November 4, 2009

Contact: Jackie Bonafide, Program Information Officer

Phone: (603) 527-4400

SUBJECT: Veterans Helping Veterans group at NHVH Seeks Gift Certificates for Raffle

TILTON, NH - Being away from home during the holidays is hard, but being in the military on a battlefield in Afghanistan or Iraq is much, much harder. At the New Hampshire Veterans Home (NHVH), the residents and staff are supporting servicemen and women overseas in a special “Veterans Helping Veterans” effort and would like others to contribute by donating gift certificates for a raffle prize that will be drawn on Wednesday, November 25.

Several times a year NHVH staff and volunteers hold a raffle for the Veterans Helping Veterans program. With the money raised, they buy toothpaste, soap, deodorant, insect repellant, sunscreen, nutritious snacks, and powdered drink mixes, which they package and send to servicemen and women. They insert homemade cards and handwritten letters from NH Veterans Home residents, who really understand what it feels like to be far from home in a combat situation. The thank-you letters that come back from the service members are touching and gratifying.

One soldier wrote, “I want to thank you for your generous gift of care packages and letters. It saves the soldiers a little money by not having to buy toothbrushes and toothpaste at the base. More importantly, by receiving the care packages, the soldiers know that they have the support from back home. That alone means more than anything!”

This year the members of Veterans Helping Veterans are raffling off a lighted Christmas tree and asking friends to donate gift certificates to attach to the tree. The gift certificates or gift cards can be for anything—dinners at restaurants, movie tickets, purchases at stores, and much more. Raffle tickets are sold at the Veterans Home (139 Winter Street in Tilton) and on November 25 the name of the raffle winner will be drawn. That person will receive the lighted tree, along with all of the gift certificates attached to the tree. The Veterans Helping Veterans group wants to encourage businesses and individuals to help by donating gift certificates to decorate the tree.

For more information on how to participate, please contact Donna Lamprey, NH Veterans Home “Veterans Helping Veterans” Program, at (603-527-4400). If you’d like to send a gift certificate (big or small, one or more), it can be mailed to NHVH Vets Helping Vets Christmas Raffle, 139 Winter Street, Tilton, NH 03276. If it’s more convenient, Donna will come to a business and pick up the gift certificate.

Established in Tilton in 1890 as the Soldier’s Home for Civil War Veterans, the New Hampshire Veterans Home was one of just four New Hampshire nursing homes to win the first Quality of Life Award in 2007 from the New Hampshire Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). NHVH was recognized again this year by DHHS for its continuing commitment to nursing home culture change and quality of life. The NHVH campus is home to 200 men and women who have proudly served their country and fellow New Hampshire citizens.  The mission of NHVH is to provide high quality, professional long-term care services to the Granite State’s elderly and disabled veterans.  NHVH is the only long-term care facility in the Granite State that is dedicated exclusively to veterans.
